Collections:
Students conducting research in the Wessels Library enjoy access to more than 80,000 books, sound and video recordings, and CD-ROM resources. The library also subscribes to 146 magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. In addition, the vast resources of the Internet, including DISCUS, Collegiate DISCUS, and databases to which the library subscribes, are accessible to researchers in the library and elsewhere on the campus network through the Wessels Library website on the Newberry College homepage.
To further assist those conducting research, the Wessels Library's online catalog is searchable through the library website. Other materials may be found in the Curriculum Collection, which is maintained in support of Newberry College 's teacher education program, and the Special Collection Room, which contains a wealth of historical materials on South Carolina , the Lutheran church, and Newberry College. Students may also use the library's collection of scores and recorded music (previously housed in the Music Department in the Alumni Music Center.)

Mission Statement:
It is the goal of Wessels Library's dedicated staff of librarians, clerks, and student workers to assist students with their research. Among the many useful services they provide are reference assistance, interlibrary loan searches, group and individual instruction in research methods and the use of library resources, and the maintenance of a variety of computer-accessed databases for student use.
Library Policies:
Borrowing Materials - The Wessels Library collection is available for use either on loan or for use only in the library. Borrowing privileges are extended to students on a term-by-term basis, contingent upon registration for classes and the presentation of a current Newberry College student identification card. This ID card with an encoded barcode or a current circulation barcode affixed to it must be presented in order to borrow materials from the library.
Materials from the Circulating Collection may be borrowed for three (3) weeks for students and one (1) full semester for faculty/staff, and when due may be renewed for 1 additional loan period if there are no requests for them from other borrowers.
The library's Reserve Materials Collection provides students with access to materials intended by faculty members for the exclusive use of those enrolled in specific classes or courses. Since the faculty member specifies the manner in which these resources can be used, some are restricted to "library use only," while others may be borrowed "overnight" or for other short intervals of time. All materials borrowed "overnight" must be returned to the library by 10:00 a.m. on the next business day.
Materials housed in the library's Periodicals Collection and Reference Collection are intended for use only in the library.
Materials housed in the library's Special Collection are intended for scholarly research within the library and may not be borrowed. Many Special Collection resources are unique or fragile and must be handled with care. Permission to use the Special Collection resources or make photocopies of materials in it must be obtained from a reference librarian.
Overdue and Lost Materials - Each student is responsible for all library materials borrowed with his or her student ID card. For this reason, students are discouraged from borrowing materials for the use of others. All materials borrowed from the library should be returned promptly and in good condition. The fees charged for overdue library materials are as follows:
- 10 cents per day, per item, for overdue circulating materials
- 25 cents per hour, per item, for overdue reserve materials
- 25 cents per day, per item, for overdue interlibrary loan materials
Damaged materials should be reported to the Public Services Librarian when returned. There is no charge or fee for damage that can be repaired by the library staff, but the student will be charged for damage that necessitates professional repair. This fee varies according to the nature of the repair or replacement. Students who lose library materials should report the loss to the Public Services Librarian immediately. The student assumes responsibility for the replacement of lost materials. If the material lost is part of a set that can only be replaced through the purchase of a complete set, the student will be responsible for the cost of a replacement set.
Overdue Notification - An overdue notice is sent to the borrower's mailbox when books or other library materials are not returned by the date stamped on the "date due" slip placed in each item. Students with overdue library materials will receive as many as three notices for each occurrence: the first overdue notice will be mailed on the day after the book is due. A second notice will be mailed one week later and a third and final notice, if necessary, will be mailed two weeks after the due date.
At the end of the term, a list of students having unresolved library obligations (overdue library materials and/or unpaid library fines) is submitted to the college business office. No grades or transcripts are issued to students on this list until their library obligations have been settled.
Library Etiquette - Students using Wessels Library are expected to respect the right of all library users to a quiet, reflective environment for study and research. The Reference Room and Curriculum Room are designated and maintained as "quiet study only" areas except for those times when class bibliographic instruction activities are being conducted there by library staff. Individual study carrels are available for use on all floors. Students who are disrupting this environment will be asked to leave. Group study sessions may be conducted in study suites located in the library's Periodicals Room. Eating, drinking, the use of tobacco products, and using personal audio equipment without headphones are not permitted in the library.
Special Library Services - Students may send and receive faxes in Wessels Library. Please inquire at the Public Services Desk to use the machine. A Newberry College long distance access code is required to fax long distance. The library also maintains a variety of coin-operated photocopiers, including copiers for microfilm and microfiche. Wessels Library also maintains a "lost and found." Please check the Public Services Desk if you lose an item in the library.
Brief History:
The heart of any academic institution is its library. The Wessels Library was dedicated in 1954 in memory of Frederick S. Wessels, Sr., a former trustee and long-time friend of Newberry College. The library was extensively renovated in 1986 and subsequently expanded in 1990 during the construction of the adjoining Langford Communications Center .
