Nursing
Education - Some Definitions
- Nursing
Education Program - encompasses the entire
course of study in a baccalaureate nursing program. A student
at Newberry College will receive instruction according to
a two-stage process - the first will be students who are
enrolled in our Pre-Nursing program during the first two
years of study and the second for those who are formally
admitted into the Nursing Program.
-
Pre-Nursing ( Lower Division) - the portion
of study that includes general education courses- the broad,
liberal arts base characteristic of a BSN program. It also
includes a set of prerequisite courses specifically designed
to set the stage for courses in a nursing curriculum. Typically,
these courses will be taken by students in their freshman
and sophomore years. At Newberry College this would include
completion of a Core general studies course of instruction
required of all Newberry College graduates.
- Nursing
Major ( Upper Division) - the portion of
the nursing education program that consists of professional
nursing-specific courses along with a few courses remaining
in the Core general studies requirements. The nursing major
courses will typically be taken during the junior and senior
years.
- Clinical
Practicum - the application of nursing knowledge-guided
by theory and research-in practical settings such as hospitals,
clinics, and the community.
