  • New Partnership Enriches Teacher Education Program at Newberry College
(left to right: Dr. Charles Hatch, Dr. Cindy Johnson-Taylor, and President Mitchell Zais)

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College’s Teacher Education Program announced a new partnership with the Institute for Evidence-Based Decision Making in Education at a reception at the Newberry Opera House, Tuesday, September 25.

The Affiliation with EDIE will be a valuable resource to Newberry College’s Teacher Education Program in a wide variety of areas. EDIE will help promote the college on a national level and students and faculty will have access to current research on what works to improve student achievement.

“EDIE is looking forward to a rewarding relationship with Newberry College to benefit the college, faculty, students and nearby school districts,” said Dr. Charles Hatch, CEO, EDIE. “In this closer relationship, Newberry College will be our academic home.”

With the new affiliation, students will have the opportunity to develop a relationship with Hatch, a national expert on PRAXIS preparation, a test used as part of the teacher certification process.

According to Newberry College Education Department Chair, Dr. Cindy Johnson-Taylor, this collaboration is one that will be mutually beneficial to both the college and EDIE. “EDIE is based on the same principle as our conceptual framework,” said Johnson-Taylor, “that effective teachers model best practice in their instruction and assessment and that this best practice is research based and data driven.”

  • LiveText

All teacher candidates are now required to purchase a subscription to LiveText.  Subscriptions can be purchased in the Newberry College Bookstore for $89. LiveText is the student and faculty interface with the Unit Assessment System which is an important part of our national accreditation as a teacher education program. It is also a valuable tool for students to both track and demonstrate their progress in the Teacher Education Program.  LiveText training sessions will be held in the fall to teach everyone how to set up an account and use it to the maximum benefit.

  • SC Teachers Loan Adds Two Critical Subject Areas

The South Carolina State Board of Education announced that Physical Education and Early Childhood Education will be added to the list of “critical subject areas” for the 2007/08 school year. The addition of these subjects will allow students enrolled in college for the 2007/08 academic year with plans to become certified in either of the areas to now be eligible to receive funds from the SC Teachers Loan program. Previous recipients of SC Teacher Loans who are teaching either subject will be eligible for forgiveness beginning in the 2007/08 school year. SC Teacher Loan applications can be picked up in the Financial Aid Office.
