Students who expect to become pastors or to serve churches in other full-time positions should plan to enroll in a seminary or divinity school after graduation from Newberry. Most theological schools accept applicants who have a bachelor's degree in any field, but a general liberal arts education is considered more appropriate than one in a highly specialized field or concentrated in one academic area. The student who graduates with a major in English, history, psychology, sociology, or theatre/speech should be qualified for a successful experience in a seminary. One who has a major in religion/philosophy, or who pursues a minor in religion and one of the above fields, would be especially well-equipped for graduate study leading to a full-time church vocation.
Regardless of the major chosen, the pre-seminary student should take courses in the following disciplines: English literature, history, philosophy, psychology, religion, sociology, and speech. Other helpful subjects are art, education, foreign languages, music, and theatre.
In addition to academic experiences, all students have opportunities to participate in campus ministry programs. These include worship, education, service, and fellowship. The Campus Pastor is available for consultation and pastoral discussion.
Pre-Seminary students are encouraged to take part in leadership development programs both on campus and in local parishes and institutions. The Weber Ministry House resource room offers printed and video materials distributed through the Church, as well as catalogs from seminaries, graduate schools, and professional programs.
The Pre-Seminary Track is coordinated by Pastor Beverly Aurand, Campus Pastor.
