Newberry College implemented the Communication Across the Curriculum Program (CACP) as part of a larger system that stresses critical thinking skills and communication skills. CACP addresses the need for skills in writing, reading, listening, and use of support media. In particular, the area of writing will be evaluated through a special assignment and assessment system.

Entering freshman students will be admitted to English 111, or the first college-level English course, on the basis of SAT/ACT verbal/writing scores, high school English course grades, and other relevant data as determined by the Department of English, Literature, and Languages. Students who pass English 111 with a “C” or above also pass CACP: Level 1. Students not admitted into English 111 are placed into English 099, a developmental writing course designed to help students master basic writing skills. Students who transfer English 111 and meet other criteria designated by the Department of English, Literature, and Languages pass CACP: Level 1.

Students must demonstrate Level 2 writing skills by writing three acceptable papers representing three different fields (e.g., history, English, and biology). Students usually demonstrate Level 3 writing skills by writing three acceptable papers in their major. Specific Level 3 requirements vary from department to department, so students should consult the most recent CACP Student Manual for specific requirements.

Students with a minor can complete one Level 3 paper in the minor discipline. Level 2 writing skills, then, are demonstrated across the curriculum while Level 3 writing skills are demonstrated within the major discipline.

Students transferring to Newberry may meet CACP Level 2 requirements by writing one Level 2 paper (instead of the usual three) provided they meet all of the following requirements:

              1.    The student must have earned at least 56 semester
                     hours at Newberry College.
              2.    The student also must have completed ENG 11
                     and  ENG 112 (or the equivalent) with a grade of
                     "C" or above.

ALL Newberry students are required to complete Level 1 and Level 3 requirements as defined in the CACP Student Manual. Students who enroll in Dual Degree programs with other universities and institutions must complete the following CACP requirements:

              1.    Two years at Newberry: Level, 1 three Level 2
                     papers, and one Level 3 paper.
              2.    Three years at Newberry: Level 1, three Level 2
                     papers, and two Level 3 papers.
