Education Club Affiliates with National Future Educators Association
Newberry, SC, February 9, 2007: Since April 2006, CERRA (Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement) has been recognized as the South Carolina contact for the Future Educators Association, which means that pre-collegiate and pre-service recruitment efforts can be broadened in many ways.
In September CERRA sent a letter to all Teacher Cadet instructors and College Partner coordinators. The invitation was simply worded.
It takes only one committed individual — a student, a teacher, a business leader, a school administrator, a parent — to light the spark. That individual contacts others who see a need for a Future Educators Association (FEA) chapter. As a group, these individuals examine their local needs, discuss how they believe a chapter can help them meet those needs, and begin to involve students in initial planning and organization. We have seen the need for a widespread effort to expand FEA in South Carolina. Won’t you join us as we reach a larger audience of future teachers?
CERRA recently announced that over 50 charter chapters have accepted the challenge to reach a broader audience of those who aspire to learn more about the teaching profession. Nationally, this means that the number of South Carolina’s FEA chapters ranks in the top ten. This is quite an accomplishment in a small amount of time, but it attests to the commitment of high schools and higher education institutions who agree that they must cast a wider net to attract future teachers.
Newberry College represents one committed higher education institution which answered that call to light the spark. By doing so, Newberry College and the surrounding community will reach a larger audience of future teachers and a more diverse population.
Amanda Graham, Program Director for CERRA said, “CERRA is proud of the accomplishments that Newberry College has already achieved, in just a few months of recruiting charter members, the kind of recognition that is worthy of a spotlight on the FEA page at www.cerra.org. Under the leadership of energetic, efficacious students and inspirational advisors, there isn’t much that Newberry can’t accomplish. We look forward to what the future holds for a charter organization with such spirit and enthusiasm, so early on.”
At its meeting on February 7, 2007, the Education Club of Newberry College officially became a chapter of the Future Educators Association. Thirty-one students were on hand for the meeting which provided an overview of FEA, the election of officers, and a fashion show in which teacher education students modeled what should and should not be worn when visiting a public school.
