Do
I need my ID card to use the library ?
Yes.
If you want to check out books or other library materials,
you need to bring your student ID card. We WILL NOT
check out items to individuals without cards!
How
do I log onto the computers in the library ?
You
will need your Newberry College Network ID and password to
use the computers in the library, whether you want to check
your email, look for a book in the online library catalog,
or search for articles in any one of the library's numerous
electronic databases.
What
computer resources does the library offer ?
The
library currently offers six (6) computer workstations that
are located in the Reference Room and are outfitted with latest
versions of Windows and Microsoft Office Suite. All computers
are networked so remember to bring your Newberry College Network
ID and password to use them. Additionally the
library is wireless now, so feel free to bring your own labtop
whenever you come.
What's
an OPAC? How do I find a book ?
An
OPAC is the "Online Public Access Catalog"--it's
the computer database of all the library's holdings. To find
a book, you must use the OPAC, which is accessible by clicking
on the "Library Catalog" link on the library's main
homepage. Search the catalog by subject, title, author, or
keyword! If you need help, please do not be afraid
to ask for help at the library's Public Services Desk!
Does
our library use the Dewey Decimal System like my high school
library did ?
No.
The library uses the Library of Congress (LOC) Classification
System. Here is how they break down the call numbers by subject.

RESOURCES (GENERAL)
How
do I cite... ?
Please see the "Citation Help" link on the library's
main homepage or better yet, make an appointment by calling
(803) 321-5216 to meet with someone in the college's Writing
Center located in the Academic Skills Center at Wright Hall.
Can
I use my jump/flash drive in the library computers ?
No.
Library computers are first and foremost dedicated to serving
the research needs of the library's patrons. Thus writing
papers, checking email, surfing the internet, or chatting
on Facebook, etc., are considered secondary uses and a member
of the library staff may ask you to log off of the library
computers if there is a library patron waiting to conduct
research in the library.
Does
it cost to print or photocopy in the library ?
Yes.
It costs $.10 per page to print or to photocopy. Please
see the library staff member on duty at the Public Services
Desk if you need change. Large bills may not be able
to be cashed in exchange for copies so come prepared with
$1s and $5s. Additionally the library will not provide change
so that students can do their laundry.
Where
do I send my print jobs ?
ALL
print jobs completed in the library should be sent to the
printer entitled: Library Cannon.
Can
I purchase school supplies at the library ?
No.
The members of the library staff will try to help you if you
need a piece of paper or a pencil/pen, but the smart thing
to do is to remember that you need to bring your own supplies
when you come to study in the library.
Can
I return my library books even when the library is not open
?
Of
course. Just use the library's book drop located just outside
the library's main entrance whenever the library is closed
and you need to return a book.
Am
I fined if my books, etc., are overdue? If so how much ?
Yes.
Please refer to the "Library Policies" link on the
library's main homepage for a list of the overdue fines for
the different types of library materials you can borrow. Please
also remember that you are still responsible for returning
your library books even when the library is closed, just use
the overnight book drop located just outside the library's
main entrance. Additionally always make sure to clear
your library borrowing record of books and fines before the
end of each semester so that you can get that semester's final
grades, any transcripts you need, and most importantly, your
diploma.
Can
I send a fax from the library? How much does it cost ?
Yes.
You can send a fax from the library and it does not cost a
thing as long as you are a Newberry College student, faculty,
or staff member. Just ask the library staff member on duty
at the Public Services Desk whenever you are ready to fax
something.
Am
I responsible if I loan a friend the library books I checked
out ?
Yes.
They are your responsibility and you will be fined if they
are not returned . The best thing to do is not to
loan out your library books to anyone.
What
does it mean when my professor says he/she put something on
Reserve at the library for my class to read ?
Reserve
is the designation for an article, book, etc., that a professor
can request that the library hold behind the Public Services
Desk only to be checked out for a shortened amount of time
rather than the typical library loan period. Most Reserve
items are put on for “in library use only.” This ensures that
the professor's students have access to the materials when
they need it rather than the materials being checked out by
someone else for a typical loan period. Reserve materials
can be checked out by asking the library staff member on duty
at the Public Services Desk for the item. Make sure
you have either your professor's name or course number when
requesting it. For further information on this Reserves,
please refer to the "Library Policies" link on the
library's main homepage.
