Department of Biology
and Chemistry
In order to serve students from the state of South Carolina
and beyond who have ambitions to be a Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine, Newberry College is pleased to announce a transition
from its Veterinary Technology program to a concentration
in Pre-Veterinary Studies. The intent is to enable more students
to successfully enter a Veterinary Medical School. Taking
currently existing courses in the sciences, this new concentration
in Pre-Veterinary Studies will now be offered, beginning in
the fall of 2006. It will be offered under the umbrella of
the Bachelor of Science program in Biology. Even though the
B.S. program in Biology has ably prepared many students in
the past for entry into Veterinary School, Newberry College
will now offer this new concentration as a means to attract
and prepare students through a more formally structured curriculum.
It is hoped the new program will rival the excitement that
has been generated through another recently approved concentration
in the sciences: Forensic Science within the Chemistry major.
For many years students have entered veterinary school upon
their graduation from Newberry College. In fact, in the past
five years students have been accepted into veterinary medical
school programs at Auburn University, Louisiana State University,
Tuskegee University, the University of Georgia, and the University
of Tennessee Knoxville. The new concentration in Pre-Veterinary
Studies will build upon this success and better specifically
prepare students intent upon a career in Veterinary Medicine.
More information
will be posted as it becomes available.
