Experiencing Political Science: Political Science students explore and experience the exciting world of politics. They have the opportunity and freedom to debate contemporary domestic and international political issues; to develop a deeper understanding of diverse political systems; to appreciate the complexity of world politics and its impact on American life; to participate in student government; to work in Presidential, Congressional or state and local campaigns; to intern in law, local, state, or federal offices; and to attend research conferences.

Scholarships: Political Science offers generous, competitive scholarships for those interested in politics and public service, graduate school, and public administration. Interested students should click on this Political Science Scholarship link, read about this great opportunity, download the application, and submit required materials by the deadline.

Jobs and Professional Education: The Political Science Program prepares its graduates to continue their education in law school or in graduate studies in public administration, political science, or international studies; or to find employment in international affairs, public service, public administration, politics, education, business, communications, criminal justice, and social work. The curriculum is designed to provide students with the technology, reading, writing, speaking, research, and critical thinking skills to support their career objectives.

The Political Science Major:

Majoring in political science requires 39 hours of coursework. Students take coursework in the major areas of the discipline:

  Public Law

  American Politics

  World Politics

  Comparative Politics

  Political Methodology

  Political Thought

In each area, students are introduced to the fundamental ideas of politics and then they have the opportunity to delve more deeply into special interests. Advisors help students shape the program to meet their interests and career goals.

Internships:

Internships are a great way to prepare for graduate or law school, network, find a job, build professional skills, and contribute to the public good.

Political Internships : Political Science majors pursue exciting internships with Presidential, Senatorial, Congressional, and Gubernatorial campaigns; Republican and Democratic State and National Committees; the governor's office; the state legislature; the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate; State Department; U.S. Embassies abroad, and Amnesty International, for example

Legal Internships : Political Science majors preparing for law can arrange internships in Newberry, with U.S. Attorneys, Newberry College alumni, and with attorneys in their hometown.
