Freshmen Applicants

Newberry College's personal attention to students begins with the recruitment and admission processes. Initial contacts with College are usually made at high school or college fair visits; however, an official campus visit, including a guided tour and personal admission interview, is essential for each student prior to enrollment. The following materials should be submitted to the Office of Admissions early in the senior year of high school:

Application for Admission (online | print)
Application Fee ($25 Online | $30 print)
Official transcript(s) of high school records, including class rank
Official score reports of SAT or ACT
Certification of graduation from an approved secondary school is required prior to enrollment.Under special circumstances, the General Educational Development Test (GED) is accepted.

Degree seeking Freshmen who are 25 years of age or older and applying for the regular day program are exempt from submitting SAT/ACT scores. High School transcripts or acceptable GED scores are still required. Additionally, a personal admissions interview to assess the student's qualifications, motivation, and recent history may be required.

Deadlines
Newberry College specifies no application deadline; the rolling admissions practice is observed. Therefore, applicants are notified of their status as soon as the application for admission and all necessary supporting materials are received and evaluated.

Determination of Admission Status
The Director of Admissions determines the admission status of all applicants to Newberry College, taking into consideration the following:

SAT or ACT scores
Grade point average on academic courses
High school rank
Type of course work pursued
Co-Curricular activities
Other relevant factors (e.g., part-time employment, references)

Students whose scores fall below acceptable standards have the opportunity to submit a personal essay for further consideration. Upon review, applicants may be regularly admitted; required to take a remedial English and/or Math course during summer school at Newberry College; held for additional grades or test scores; or denied admission.

As soon as possible following the Admissions decision, the applicant is notified by mail. Acceptance of the applicant is always contingent upon successful completion of course work in progress. Following high school graduation, an additional official final transcript bearing the date of graduation is required.

International applicants for both freshman and transfer admission must submit the following:

  • Application for Admission ( mandatory Form )

  • Scores from the SAT or ACT (freshmen and transfer students with fewer than 24 credits).
  • Scores from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).  A TOEFL score of 71 on the internet based exam, 525 on the paper version, or 197 on the computer version are generally required.  The test may be waived for students from countries where English is the primary language.  Students choosing to take the APIEL (Advanced Placement International English Language Exam) should score at least a 3.
  • Transcript evaluation from either WES (World Education Services www.wes.org) or ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators) for all foreign transcripts.  Applicants should submit a preliminary evaluation to avoid any confusion over acceptance about coursework and grades.  They must submit a final evaluation that shows final high school or college grades and the level of degree earned.
  • Statement of Financial Responsibility & Support and a notarized bank statement showing the student has enough financial sponsorship for the cost of the upcoming academic year.

Foreign students should apply for admission well before their anticipated date of enrollment because of the delay involved in international communications.

Home School Applicants

Students completing a home school or correspondence curriculum should keep the following points in mind.

  1. Students who have attended a high school for any amount of time should request a copy of their transcript to be forwarded to Newberry College

  2. GED is not necessary (GED would only be necessary for Title IV federal financial aid)

  3. All students will need to provide the Admissions Committee with information regarding curriculum such as class summaries, papers, exams, etc. and if he/she is working with a particular homeschooling association.

  4. Primary instructors (i.e. parents, etc.) should submit recommendations assessing the student's academic competence.

  5. A bibliography of high school literature and an essay are necessary to evaluate a student's exposure and thinking skills.

  6. Although not necessary, extracurricular activities and interviews will help determine leadership ability.

  7. Students are required to submit SAT/ACT scores

  8. Students are welcome to submit anything they feel will add to their application before presentation to the Admissions Committee.

Once the Admissions Office has received all your information, your Admissions and Financial Aid Counselor will then review your file. A personal interview may be necessary in some cases. The Admissions Office will contact you when a decision is made. Our goal is to make this process as easy as possible.

GED Applicants

Students completing the GED ( General Education Development Test ) should keep the following points in mind.

  1. GED students younger than 18 years of age must petition the Admissions Committee to be considered for admission.

  2. All students completing the GED must submit all required admissions items, and have successful GED scores, defined as an average of 45 on all tests, with no individual score lower than 40

  3. GED students who are 25 or older are exempt from taking SAT/ACT tests.

  4. Students not meeting this requirement may petition the Admissions Committee to be given special consideration for admission

Non-Degree Applicants

Students enrolled for academic credit who are not degree seeking students will be classified as Special Students at Newberry College.

Students who are non-degree seeking are not eligible for financial aid under federal regulations. Special Students are usually concurrent high school students, students seeking teacher certification only, or any students who want to just take a course for their own self improvement or enjoyment. In order to move from Special Student to degree-seeking student status, a student must be granted admit status by the Director of Admissions.

AUDITING A COURSE
Full-time students may audit courses without additional costs, subject to approval by the instructor and the Office of the Registrar. Students not enrolled full-time may audit courses at a rate of $50 per course. Audit status may not be changed to credit status after the course has begun.
