Steps for Applying for Financial Aid

  1. Complete and Submit the FAFSA (To receive any financial aid, you MUST submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA))
    • Get a PIN: A PIN is a substitute for signatures on the FAFSA and allows the FAFSA to be processed more quickly. The student and one parent must apply for a PIN from the U. S. Department of Education to file the FAFSA on the web.
      1. Go to www.pin.ed.gov. Choose “Apply for a PIN.”
      2. Supply all information requested. Be sure all this information is identical to the information on the social security card of the person requesting the PIN.
      3. Remember the password information you supplied as a part of your PIN application.
      4. Submit the request
      5. Write down the confirmation number of each PIN you request to verify it was received.
      6. A PIN will be generated and sent to each applicant by email within 24 hours. The password you created during application is required to access the PIN. If you do not provide an email address, a PIN mailer will be mailed to the address the applicant entered on the PIN web site within seven to ten days.
    • Filing on the Web:
      1. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and select "Filling out a FAFSA" in section 2.
      2. If you already have a PIN, use it to sign electronically at the beginning of your application.
      3. Enter personal information and PIN for each required signature to be authenticated.
      4. Complete the 2004-2005 FAFSA on-line.  You need your parents’ 2003 tax returns
      5. List Newberry College, code 00344000 in Step 6 of the FAFSA.
