Welcome
to the Newberry College Website, feel free to browse around
and take a look at some of the new majors in Science and Nursing
we offer (hint hint)!! I am brand new to the town of Newberry
, not to mention Newberry College ! I am from West Jefferson,
North Carolina, a very small town, not very different from
Newberry, in the northwestern part of North Carolina . I love
all kinds of sports and activities that involve the outdoors;
canoeing, kayaking, hiking, mountain climbing, you name it
and I have probably tried it once. I am also an avid volleyball
player, and my love of activity and sports has shaped my choice
of colleges, majors and careers! After graduating high school
in 2001, I followed the lead of my parents and sister and
attended Appalachian State University in Boone , North Carolina
where I majored in Exercise Science with a concentration in
Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness and minors in Psychology
and Health Promotion. I interned at the Wellness Center in
Providence Hospital in Mobile , Alabama in the summer of 2005,
but vowed never to return to the Gulf Coast after being evacuated
three times, the last by a little known hurricane by the name
of Katrina! I graduated with honors in 2006 from Appalachian
and immediately began pursuing a topic I am very passionate
about by helping health professionals in Boone develop a summer
program for overweight and obese children in the surrounding
area. Eventually I plan to continue my education and attend
Physician's Assistant school at MUSC in Charleston or East
Carolina University in North Carolina .
While
at Appalachian, I met my future husband, a fellow Appalachian
graduate of course! He played and coached football there,
and we celebrated two National Titles during his tenure as
a coach before he was offered a job coaching the defensive
line here at Newberry, thus the reasoning behind my move to
South Carolina ! Not long after moving here, I was offered
this job recruiting science and nursing students to Newberry
College . I admit that I love working with students and trying
to help them find a good college “fit”, so they get the best
education and college experience possible! I admit I miss
my family, but I am excited about a change of scenery every
once in a while. Although the environment I came from is much
different, especially the weather, I have already fallen in
love with South Carolina, and the “southern heat” that I heard
so much about is definitely growing on me (although I am going
to miss the two foot snowfalls and teen temperatures in the
winter months)!
If
you ever want to come on campus and take a look around, or
if you have questions about any of our majors, just give me
a call or shoot me an email! I hope to see you on campus soon,
and if not, maybe at a football game or two!
