Scholarships

Merit-Based Scholarships for Freshmen
The following merit-based scholarships are available to freshmen students attending Newberry College. Only one type of merit-based scholarship may be awarded to each student.  Students may apply for all merit-based scholarships by completing the application for admission.  Priority consideration will be given to students who apply and are admitted by one of the early decision deadlines.

Trustees Scholarship
  • GPA: 3.5
  • SAT: 1400
  • ACT: 32
  • Amount (Resident): up to full tuition, fees, standard room and board
  • Amount (Commuter): up to full tuition and fees
Founders Scholarship
  • GPA: 3.5
  • SAT: 1200
  • ACT: 27
  • Amount (Resident): up to $12,000
  • Amount (Commuter): up to $9,000
  • Students from outside of South Carolina will receive up to an additional $5,000 for this award.
Presidential Scholarship
  • GPA: 3.0
  • SAT: 1100
  • ACT: 24
  • Amount (Resident): up to $10,000
  • Amount (Commuter): up to $7,500
  • Students from outside of South Carolina will receive up to an additional $5,000 for this award.

Deans Scholarship

  • GPA: 3.0
  • SAT: 1000
  • ACT: 22
  • Amount( Resident): up to $ 6,000
  • Amount (Commuter): up to 4500
  • Students from outside of South Carolina will receive up to an additional $5,000 for this award.
Merit-Based Scholarships for Transfer Students
The following merit-based scholarships are available to transfer students attending Newberry College. Only one type of merit-based scholarship may be awarded to each student.  Students may apply for all merit-based scholarships by completing the application for admission.  Priority consideration will be given to students who apply and are admitted by the regular application deadline.

Trustees Scholarship
  • GPA: 3.9
  • Student must have earned at least 24, but no more than 90, transferable credit hours.
  • Amount (Resident): up to full tuition, fees, standard room and board
  • Amount (Commuter):up to  full tuition and fees
Founders Scholarship
  • GPA: 3.75
  • Student must have earned at least 24, but no more than 90, transferable credit hours.
  • Amount (Resident): up to $12,000
  • Amount (Commuter): up to $9,000
  • Students from outside of South Carolina will receive up to an additional $5,000 for this award.
Presidential Scholarship
  • GPA: 3.5

Dean's Scholarship

  •    GPA 3.0
  • Student must have earned at least 24, but no more than 90, transferable credit hours.

  • Students from outside of South Carolina will receive up to an additional $5,000 for this award.
Non-Academic Scholarships
Leadership Award
  • Recognition of a student's outstanding leadership in co-curricular activities such as student organizations, clubs, and varsity athletics.
  • Up to 10 awarded
  • Requirements: Nomination and a letter of recommendation; personal portfolio of leadership activities; active participation in a co-curricular activity at Newberry College.
  • Amount: up to $10,000
Community Service Award.
  • In recognition of a student’s outstanding involvement in community or volunteer service during high school. 
  • Up to 10 awarded.
  • Requirements: Nomination and letter of recommendation; personal portfolio of service and volunteer activities; active participation in a co-curricular activity(ies) at Newberry College. 
  • Amount: Up to $10,000.
Newberry Community Leadership Scholarship.
  • Awarded to a resident of the City of Newberry who demonstrates outstanding academic potential, personal leadership, and a commitment to civic responsibility, volunteerism, and community service.
  • 1 Awarded each year.
  • Requirements: Nomination and letter of recommendation; original essay on his/herr leadership and civic interests and intentions while attending the College; resume of prior leadership, civic, and volunteer activities.
  • Amount: Up to $10,000.
Constituency Award:
  • In addition to the above scholarships Newberry College also has specialized awards based upon participation in the Honors Program, performing, visual and creative arts, campus ministry and other co-curricular activities, emerging academic talent, and various other criteria.
Alumni Scholarships
Ellen Wingard Cobb Alumni Scholarship:
  • First time freshman
  • 3.0 High School GPA
  • Up to $1,000 awarded each year by the Newberry College Alumni Association.
  • Complete the Scholarship Application by March 15 for consideration.
 Alumni Endowed Scholarship:
  • First time freshman
  • 3.0 High School GPA
  • Up to $1,000 awarded each year by the Newberry College Alumni Association.
  • Complete the Scholarship Application by March 15 for consideration.
Greenville Area Alumni Scholarship:
  • Deserving Student from Greenville County, SC
  • Up to $1,000 awarded each year by the Newberry College Alumni Association.
  • Complete the Scholarship Application by March 15 for consideration.
Greenwood Area Alumni Scholarship:
  • resident of and attended a high school in Greenwood, Abbeville, or McCormick Counties
  • top 50% of HS class
  • demonstrate potential for campus and community leadership
  • Up to $1,000 awarded each year by the Newberry College Alumni Association.
  • Complete the Scholarship Application by March 15 for consideration.
African American Alumni Association Scholarship:
  • sophomore, junior, or senior
  • 2.5 GPA
  • Demonstrated potential for community leadership as demonstrated by involvement in NC organizations and activities.
  • Up to $1,000 awarded each year by the Newberry College Alumni Association.
  • Complete the Scholarship Application by March 15 for consideration.
Other Scholarships
Athletic Scholarship
  • Amount: up to full tuition, room and board
  • Eligibility: full-time athletes

Lutheran Heritage Award
  • For students who are (from families of) practicing Lutherans. 
  • Maximum Award: $1,000.
  • Requirements: Identification as a practicing Lutheran. 
Lutheran Ministry Family Member Award
  • Awarded to children of active ELCA Lutheran ministers or rostered ELCA leaders serving congragations (e.g. liscensed lay leaders, diaconal leaders, ordained/commissioned ministry site administrators).
  • Maximum Award: $5,000.
  • Requirements: Identification as a practicing Lutheran minister or rostered ELCA leader.
Legacy Award
  • For students whose parent or grandparent graduated from Newberry College. 
  • Maximum Award: $1,000.
  • Requirements: Provide the name of the parent or grandparent on the admissions application. 
Family Discount.
  • For students who have a sibling currently attending Newberry College full time in matriculative status. 
  • Maximum Award: 5% of assessed tuition.
  • Requirements: Provide the name of the sibling and verify the same permanent address as the candidate. 
South Carolina State Scholarships
SC Palmetto Fellows Scholarship
  • Amount: $6,700/year (freshmen); $7,500/year (sophomores, juniors, and seniors)
  • Eligibility: full time student; SC resident; 1200 SAT; 27 ACT; 3.5 GPA at end of junior year of high school; top 5% of class at end of sophomore or junior year

SC Palmetto Fellows Enhancement Scholarship
  • Amount: $2,500 a year (sophomores, juniors and seniors)
  • Eligibility: must meet all criteria to receive SC Palmetto Fellows Scholarship; must major in one of the following areas: science, mathematics, computer science or informational technology, engineering, science education, math education, or healthcare
  • How to apply: your transcript will be reviewed at the end of your freshman year
SC Life Scholarship
  • Amount: $5,000 a year (sophomores, juniors and seniors)
  • Eligibility: full time student; SC resident; and 2 out of 3 criteria: 3.0 GPA; top 30% of class; 1100 SAT or 24 ACT

SC Life Enhancement Scholarship
  • Amount: $2,500 a year (sophomores, juniors and seniors)
  • Eligibility: Incoming fall freshmen who want to qualify for the enhanced awards next year must take 14 credit hours in math and science during their freshman year. Must meet all criteria to receive SC Life Scholarship; must major in one of the following areas: science, mathematics, computer science or informational technology, engineering, science education, math education, or healthcare.

SC Hope Scholarship
  • Amount: $2,800 a year (freshman year only)
  • Eligibility: first time freshman; full time student; SC resident; 3.0 GPA; is not eligible for the Life Scholarship
