Newberry At A Glance
Heritage:
Newberry College is a coeducational liberal arts college.
It was chartered in 1856 and is located on a 80-acre campus
in Newberry, SC.
Student
Body:
Approximately 840 students from 24 states and several foreign
countries attend Newberry College. More than 70 percent of
the students live on campus in the five residence halls -
one of which is coed. A new suite-style dorm is under
construction.
Major
Learning:
Newberry students select from 20 majors, 25 areas of concentration,
and 27 minors . Degrees conferred included bachelor of arts,
bachelor of science, bachelor of music and bachelor of music
education.
Faculty
Focus:
Students-to-faculty ratio is 13:1. More than 75 percent of
full-time faculty members hold the highest degrees available
in their fields. All put teaching and students first.
Great
Books:
Newberry's Wessels Library houses 80,000 volumes, sound and
video recordings, and CD-ROM resources and subscribes to more
than 400 periodicals. A curriculum collection is maintained
for the teacher education programs.
Athletes:
Newberry offers 16 intercollegiate sports in NCAA Division
II. Baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer,
wrestling, and tennis for men. Basketball, cheerleading, cross-country,
golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball for women. Intramural
sports include flag football, basketball, volleyball and softball.
Field
of Dreams:
The Physical Education Complex includes the 1,500-seat Eleazer
Arena, as well as basketball courts, a student fitness center,
racquetball courts, the Eargle Human Performance Laboratory,
and a 25-meter outdoor pool. Setzler Field, home to Indian
fotball, seats 4,000 in its stands. A new baseball baseball
complex is being constructed.
Clubs:
More than 50 clubs and Greek organizations are on campus.
International
Connections:
Newberry has affiliations with universities in Austria, France,
Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. Students can choose to
study abroad at any of these locations as well as others.
Affiliations:
Newberry College was founded by the Lutheran Synod in South
Carolina and continues an association with the South Carolina,
Southeastern, Florida-Bahamas and Caribbean Synods of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Students from all
religious backgrounds are welcome and well represented on
campus.
Financial
Planning:
Newberry awards $5.0 million each year in academic and music
scholarships and athletic grants-in-aid.
