Newberry College's personal attention to students begins with the recruitment and admission processes. Initial contacts with College are usually made at high school or college fair visits; however, an official campus visit, including a guided tour and personal admission interview, is essential for each student prior to enrollment. The following materials should be submitted to the Office of Admissions early in the senior year of high school:

  • Application for Admission
  • $30.00 Application Fee
  • Official transcript(s) of high school records, including class rank
  • Official score reports of SAT or ACT

Certification of graduation from an approved secondary school is required prior to enrollment. Under special circumstances, the General Educational Development Test (GED) is accepted.

Degree seeking Freshmen who are 25 years of age or older and applying for the regular day program are exempt from submitting SAT/ACT scores. High School transcripts or acceptable GED scores are still required. Additionally, a personal admissions interview to assess the student's qualifications, motivation, and recent history may be required.

Deadlines

Newberry College specifies no application deadline; the rolling admissions practice is observed. Therefore, applicants are notified of their status as soon as the application for admission and all necessary supporting materials are received and evaluated.

Determination of Admission Status

The Director of Admissions determines the admission status of all applicants to Newberry College, taking into consideration the following:

  • SAT or ACT scores
  • Grade point average on academic courses
  • High school rank
  • Type of course work pursued
  • Co-Curricular activities
  • Other relevant factors (e.g., part-time employment, references)

Students whose scores fall below acceptable standards are usually referred to the Admissions Committee. This committee, comprised of members of the College faculty and administration, carefully deliberates before determining the admission status. Upon review, applicants may be regularly admitted; admitted with a reduced course load; held for additional grades or test scores; or denied admission. In cases of denial, the applicant may choose to appeal to the Dean of Admissions for further consideration.

As soon as possible following the Admissions decision, the applicant is notified by mail. Acceptance of the applicant is always contingent upon successful completion of course work in progress. Following high school graduation, an additional official final transcript bearing the date of graduation is required.

Advanced Placement Examinations

Students who score 3 or higher on the final examinations of Advanced Placement (AP) courses officially sanctioned by The College Board will receive appropriate college credit in the academic area tested. During the pre-college orientation program prior to enrollment, students are tested in English to determine appropriate placement in that area. This includes students who submit AP scores as described above or who have successfully completed (with a grade of "C" or higher) college English. See Advanced Placement Acceptance.

Required Courses

Newberry College recommends that prospective students follow a college preparatory program in high school. The College requires 18 units of successful high school study, with at least 15 of those in academic subjects. The following breakdown of these units is recommended:

  • 4 or more units of English, with emphasis in composition and usage
  • 2 units of the same foreign language
  • 3 units of mathematics (algebra; geometry)
  • 2 units of laboratory sciences (biology, chemistry, or physics)
  • 1 unit of United States or world history
  • 2 other units of social science
  • 1 unit for elective

The Admission Interview

This important part of the admission procedure should be regarded more as a conversation than an interview. The admissions counselor will use this valuable time to evaluate the prospective student's needs, goals, and interests. Comfortable school attire is always acceptable. Thirty minutes is usually considered adequate time for the interview.

Letters Of Recommendation

Although not required, letters of endorsement and recommendation from high school guidance counselors, principals, headmasters, instructors, pastors, employers, and/or Newberry College alumni are welcome. These will be added to the applicant's file and may be used to aid in difficult or unusual admission decisions. Letters of recommendation are required for certain scholarship awards.

Advance Deposits

Students who are accepted for admission to Newberry College are asked to confirm their intention to enroll by remitting an advance deposit of $200, to be divided as follows:

  • $100 tuition deposit, to be applied to the first semester's tuition
  • $100 housing security fee, to remain on account as long as the student is enrolled at the College (not required of commuting students).

For students entering the fall semester and summer sessions, the deposit is nonrefundable after May 1. For those entering the spring semester, the deposit is nonrefundable after December 1.

Physical Examination

New students must have a physical examination prior to enrollment at Newberry College. An official Student Medical Form furnished by the Admissions Office upon acceptance must be completed by a physician. Students must have proof of measles and rubella vaccination before registering for classes. If the medical form has not been filed with the Admissions Office within three weeks after enrollment, students will be given the option of having a complete physical examination by the College Physician at their expense or withdrawing from the College.
