Newberry College teamed with West Electric to renovate the historic Oakland Mill as student housing. Students moved into the facility in August 2011.The 29 student units available were two- and four-bedroom suites. The housing, located three-tenths of a mile from campus, includes meeting rooms, study areas and a game lounge.
The Oakland Mill project was a catalyst to redevelop City infrastructure, including nearby Oakland Park. As the project is completed, one-third of the City will be redeveloped-a successful town and gown partnership between the College and the community. The Oakland Mill became a landmark project that is likely to receive awards for excellence in historical and architectural renovation. By bringing this historic structure into the future with updates and renovations, the College is benefiting the community as it invests in its students.
