Student Healthcare and Counseling Services

Office Hours and Location

The Wellness Center is open Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. We are located behind the Science/Math building and across from Brokaw Hall.


Health Services at Newberry College contributes to the physical, academic, emotional, and social development of students by providing quality health care for students who are physically ill and health education promoting healthy behaviors for all students. In support of the mission of the college and operating with a commitment to confidentiality, ethical behavior, and health care practices that reflect current research and professional standards, Health Services assists students in achieving success within the college environment and in pursuing healthy, productive, and satisfying lifestyles.

Services Available:

  • assessment of acute illness.
  • collaborative work with the physician regarding treatment.
  • referrals to physicians, resources on campus, and within the community.
  • flu vaccines.
  • nutritional counseling.
  • diabetic counseling.
  • education on health related topics.

Consultation and educational services are also available to the institution on health related topics to assist in fostering an environment supportive of the intellectual, emotional, and social development of students.

Physician services are contracted with Compass Family Medicine P.A., for illness, injuries, and ongoing allergy injections. The physician's service bill is separate and filed through the student's private insurance. Students will need to provide insurance information and co-pay for physician services.

Each student must complete a Health Services Packet, which includes a medical history form, TB questionnaire, and a record of immunization prior to new student orientation, in order for medical service to be provided. The Health Services packet may be mailed to Health Services, 2100 College Street, Newberry, SC 29108, faxed to Penny Howard @ 803-321-5239 or e-mailed. 

All forms for athletic participation are to be returned to the Athletic Office. If you have any questions regarding athletic forms, please contact 803-321-5166.


Meet our Counselor

Martha Dorrell, MSW, LISW-CP

Martha Dorrell is a licensed therapist with over 20 years experience in the mental health field. She received her Master's degree from the University of South Carolina and her Bachelor's degree from Newberry College. She is a certified cognitive behavioral therapist, who specializes in the treatment of adolescents and young adults experiencing emotional/behavioral issues. Ms. Dorrell has been employed at Newberry College since 2006 and is the Director of  Counseling Services.

Counseling Services at Newberry College contributes to the academic, emotional, and social development of the students who are experiencing emotional/behavioral or learning difficulties. In support of the mission of the college and operating with a commitment to confidentiality, ethical behavior, and counseling practices that reflect current research, professional standards, and an adherence to the South Carolina State Mental Health Laws, Counseling Services assists students in achieving success within the college environment and in pursuing productive and satisfying lifestyles.
