Teacher
Cadet College Partnerships
The
primary goal of the Teacher Cadet Program in South Carolina
is to encourage academically able students who possess exemplary
interpersonal and leadership skills to consider teaching as
a career. An important secondary goal of the program is to
provide these talented future community leaders with insights
about teachers and schools so that they will be civic advocates
of education.
The Teacher Cadet Program is an innovative approach
designed to attract talented young people to the teaching
profession through a challenging introduction to teaching.
The program seeks to provide high school students insight
into the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling and
the critical issues affecting the quality of education in
America 's schools.
Newberry
College is pleased to serve as College Partner to 8 area high
schools, including Airport High School, Irmo High School, Dutch Fork High School, Lugoff-Elgin
High School, Chapin High School, Mid-Carolina High School, Newberry High School, and Columbia High School. While there
are many facets to the college partnership at Newberry College, some important aspects of the relationship include 3 hours
of college credit offered to successful Teacher Cadets absolutely
free of charge, college professors to visit the high school
classes and materials supplied to the classes for their use.
Probably
the most popular aspect of the relationship is Teacher Cadet
College Day, a day planned by former Teacher Cadets who attend
Newberry College, which is held for current Teacher Cadets. This
year's College Day was held on Friday, November 2, 2007.

Teacher Cadet Day at Newberry College
NEWBERRY, S.C. – On Friday, November 2, 2007, Newberry College was host to 145 Teacher Cadets from eight local high schools – Airport, Chapin, Dutch Fork, Irmo, Lugoff-Elgin, Mid-Carolina, Newberry, and Columbia.
The theme of the day was Teachers Making a Difference. Planned by Newberry College students Whitney Kibler, Paige Derrick and Craig Wheatley, the event was a fun day for all involved. High school students were able to visit a college class, tour the campus, meet with student affairs representatives, meet with admissions counselors and eat in the college cafeteria. Also new this year, the high school students were able to get their own official Newberry College I.D. cards made.
“I am very pleased with the work our students did in welcoming these special visitors to our campus. We had 24 Newberry College teacher candidates volunteer their time to make this a special day. This is a wonderful recruiting tool for Newberry College and also for the teaching profession overall,” said Cindy Johnson –Taylor, Chair of the Education Department.
Tracy Craven, a first grade teacher at Oakdale Elementary School in Rock Hill, SC was the keynote speaker for College Day. She told cadets that the teacher who made a difference in her life was the one who had high expectations for her as a student.
Newberry College students and teacher cadets made a difference by hosting book drives at the various schools. Over 2,329 books were donated and will be given to the Hampton #2 School District.
The Teacher Cadet Program is implemented state wide through the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA). The primary goal of the Teacher Cadet Program in South Carolina is to encourage academically able students who possess exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills to consider teaching as a career. An important secondary goal of the program is to provide these talented future community leaders with insights about teachers and schools so that they will be civic advocates of education. Newberry College is pleased to serve as a college partner and be involved in the Teacher Cadet Program.
