Assistant Professor of Communications

JOB DESCRIPTION :  Presents the theory and practice of mass communications and provides the historical, legal, ethical and practical aspects needed for students to conduct successful careers in the field. Trains students in all aspects of media practice, including writing for broadcast and print media, video and audio production, and the planning, development and execution of media campaigns. Provides practical experience to students, including the development and production of media products in print or broadcast form. Keeps students current on technological, legal and ethical developments within the field.

 

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS :

  1. All other tasks as assigned by the Chair of the Department of Theatre, Visual Arts and Communications or Vice President for Academic Affairs. 
  2. Remain current on SACS criteria and ensure compliance in area of control.
  3. Meet goals and objectives as communicated in the College's Performance Reviews.
  4. Effective stewardship of the College's financial resources. 
  5. Actively engages in creative, motivational instruction of undergraduate students.
  6. Responsible for teaching and developing a variety of courses in the media and communications.
  7. Conducts labs in journalism, video production, public relations and/or other related topics.
  8. Organize and present multimedia presentations for classroom activities.
  9. Remain current regarding leading-edge communications techniques, hardware and software.
  10. Serve as faculty adviser to student organizations.
  11. Establishes personal relationships in order to counsel students and promote their learning and development.
  12. Serves as a Christian role model by facilitating the spiritual development of students.
  13. Effectively participates in academic advisement in such a way as to motivate students and increase retention.
  14. Makes major contributions by serving effectively on College committees.
  15. Makes major contributions through public service to the community.
  16. Engages in scholarship through research, publication, and participation in scholarly conferences and symposia.  

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Ability to lift 35 lbs. on a frequent basis; climbing ladders; shelving books; stooping; bending; standing for long periods of time.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS : Estimated at 5%

 

 

 

EDUCATIONAL OR OTHER HIRING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

 

REQUIRED:

Master's degree in journalism or mass communications field, with 16 graduate hours in the discipline

Ability to relate to students on a professional level

Advanced computer skills

Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills

Excellent organizational and time management skills

Ability to support the goals and mission of Newberry College

Excellent interpersonal skills

Ability to build effective partnerships within the College community

Extensive professional experience in media production and relations

Knowledge of current media software

 

PREFERRED :

Ph.D. in journalism or mass communications field

A relevant area of research specialization; an active program of research

Ability to teach a wide range of courses related to organizational communication.

Ability to develop and teach courses in intercultural/global communication is also required.

An understanding of private, Christian, liberal arts education and the ability to work in a small college setting

Potential to establish excellence in scholarship; a strong record of publication; and evidence of excellence in teaching are expected.

Assistant Professor of Sociology

 

The Department of History and Social Sciences at Newberry College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Sociology beginning August 2008. Ph.D. in Sociology required. We seek energetic and dynamic candidates who have expertise in criminology and one or more of the following areas: gender, minority groups, or stratification. Candidates are expected to have teaching experience and academic scholarship commensurate with the rank of assistant professor.
