Newberry College Celebrates Homecoming

October 18, 2012

Newberry College celebrated Homecoming on Oct. 13th with a record high attendance. Many events going on throughout the weekend attracted alumni, community members and friends of the college to visit and celebrate by “Bringing Back the Memories.”

On Friday night, alumni and guests danced the night away in Kaufmann Hall to the music of the “East Coast Party Band.” Students enjoyed a Homecoming Carnival on campus, sponsored by SGA, which offered free games and prizes. A fantastic firework show lit up the sky later on that night for all to enjoy.

Saturday kicked off with the fourth annual Homecoming 5K Run & Walk beginning at 8:00 a.m. The Alumni Association meeting, held in Wiles Chapel, recognized the members of the classes of 1962, 1987 and 2002. Thirty-two past Homecoming Queens were also in attendance and were the honored guests of the weekend.

The tailgating atmosphere was like no other at Newbery College. Around the main circle, there were many celebrating and enjoying the festivities. This provided an opportunity for networking between alumni and current students.

“Seeing so many Newberry College alumni and friends of the college returning to enjoy the weekend’s festivities, tailgating all over the campus on a beautiful fall day is what makes me proud to be a part of the alumni relations efforts at the college,” said John Derrick, Director of Alumni Relations.

The homecoming parade featured the past homecoming queens, President Scherrens and his family, the Miss Newberry College and her Court, and many floats decorated by student organizations.

Setzler Field stadium was packed with cheering fans wearing their favorite colors, scarlet and gray. During halftime, the Newberry College band performed and Alex Hatch was crowned the 2012 Newberry College Homecoming Queen.
