New Social Media Major Offered at Newberry College
December 03, 2012
Newberry College is pleased to announce the addition of its new, Social Media major and minor beginning in fall 2013.
“It is an exciting new program where there is a projected short and long term demand for college graduates since the field is expanding so rapidly,” said Dr. Maurice Scherrens, President of Newberry College.
Offered through the Department of Arts and Communications, the Social Media major will be an original interdisciplinary program that would capitalize on the strengths of existing courses in Graphic Design, Communications, Business Administration, Psychology and Statistics. Four innovative courses, created specifically for the Social Media major are also included in the curriculum.
Through these courses students will explore the techniques of social media, in addition to the development and direction of social media as a creative industry. Students will work to develop marketing and branding strategies for projects including corporate, non-profit, entertainment, sports, news and politics.
“Newberry has something that very few colleges have to offer, an exciting major that will prepare graduates to be pioneers in a cutting edge industry that will create critical thinkers and innovators,” said Tania Sosiak, Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Social Media and founder of the new program.
Graduates can obtain jobs in many areas, including Fortune 500 companies, non-profit agencies, the political arena, sports, entertainment, travel or news.
According to Netpop Research, “Social media use in the U.S. has increased 356% since 2006.” Dreamgrow.com reports in its Twenty-one Social Media Marketing Trends for 2012, that “social media advertising will grow to $5 billion in 2012, with 25% targeting local social advertising.”
“I feel that a graduate from our program will be more competitive in the marketplace, said Sosiak. “Students will be able to do many things both analytically and creatively. Collect and study data, market, create, design, broadcast and develop are just some of the skills a graduate will have as a part of their social media toolbox.”
The Social Media major is just one of the new majors available at Newberry College. The College re-established the Accounting major for the fall 2012 semester. Also in 2012, the Department of Athletics and Department of Teacher Education and Sport Professions collaborated to introduce a new minor in Athletic Training.
