Dr. Timothy G. Elston has been appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Newberry College. He has served in this position on an interim basis since July 2011.

A faculty committee was established by President Scherrens to assess Dr. Elston as a candidate for this position. The committee was co-chaired by Dr. Betsy McDowell, Professor and Chair of the Department of Nursing and Dr. Joseph Franklin, Professor and Chair of the Business, Behavioral and Social Sciences Department.

“After a thorough evaluation process with multiple inputs from the College community, it became clear to the Vetting Committee that Dr. Elston was the unanimous choice for the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College. Dr. Elston has demonstrated a clear commitment to this institution through a proven record of academic leadership,” said Dr. Joseph Franklin.

Dr. Elston began his career at Newberry College in 2004 as an Assistant Professor of History and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2009. He served as Chair of the Department of History and Social Sciences from 2007 to fall 2010.

In 2011 he was named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, where he was responsible for the creation of the Center for Student Success. He also created and enforced the Academic Integrity Policy and assisted in other special projects for the President.

Also in 2011, he was promoted to Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College.  He managed a $5 million dollar budget while overseeing all academic programs, guiding faculty in academic strategic planning, and providing initial support for the development of the future Speers Street Complex, a $6 million dollar initiative.
In addition, Dr. Elston has served as Faculty Council Chair, member of the SACS Standards Committee and the Teacher Advancement Team, freshman mentor, academic advisor, and faculty advisor for Blue Key National Honor Fraternity.

“I am both humbled and pleased that President Scherrens and the faculty believe in me and the skill set I bring to entrust me with the responsibilities of guiding the Academic program,” said Dr. Elston. “I am looking forward to working cooperatively with faculty and other administrators as we lead Newberry College into a bright future.”

Dr. Elston holds two degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln – a Doctorate in History and a Master’s in History. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Western Oregon University and a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Education from Abilene Christian University.

“We are very fortunate to have someone like Dr. Elston serving the College,” said Dr. Maurice Scherrens, President of Newberry College. “He has made tremendous contributions to our campus during his tenure and I am confident that with Dr. Elston’s leadership, the College will advance to even higher levels of achievement.”
