Inauguration of Newberry College’s 22nd President To Be Held April 12

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College, a Lutheran-affiliated liberal arts college founded in 1856, announced plans for the inauguration of its 22nd president, Dr. Maurice William Scherrens, at 3 p.m. Friday, April 12.
Scherrens is the former senior vice president of George Mason University, and was appointed president of the Newberry College Aug. 13, 2012.
The inauguration ceremony will be held in Wiles Chapel on campus and is open to anyone in the community to attend. The inauguration will include guest speakers representing the Board of Trustees, alumni association, city of Newberry, faculty and student government association.
Following the guest speakers, Scherrens, will receive his investiture as president. In doing so, he will also officially become a tenured member of the Newberry faculty. He will then deliver remarks to an audience of faculty, staff, alumni, students, families and members of the Newberry community.
The college has a long tradition of providing educational opportunities for a diverse population of students, offering a strong liberal arts foundation with specialized professional degree programs, including one of the only interdisciplinary social media majors in the country. The College also takes pride in its highly respected forensic science program, a fast developing nursing program and a music program widely known for its annual jazz festival and marching band.
Events planned for the weekend to celebrate this day in Newberry College’s history, include a “fun day” organized by student affairs and a spring football game Saturday, April 13. These events are open to all prospective students and their families.
