Scherrens to Newberry College: ‘You had me at hello’

NEWBERRY — “He’s passionate and committed to Newberry from the classroom to the football field, giving students the true Newberry experience,” said Herman R. Yoos, III, Bishop of the South Carolina ELCA Synod about Newberry College President Dr. Maurice Scherrens.

Newberry College inaugurated its 22nd president, Dr. Maurice W. Scherrens Friday. Scherrens has been with the college since August 2012 and it was time to make it official.

Before coming to Newberry, Scherrens served as the senior vice president and Chief Operating Officer at George Mason University. He also taught Strategic Decision Making, Sports Ethics, and Sports Finance while at the university.

While at Newberry, Scherrens has initiated “Tuesdays With Morrie,” which is an open discussion meeting between the faculty, staff and students that covers topics of interest for those in attendance. He is also working to strengthen Newberry College’s Lutheran identity with the new “Tuesday Morning Prayer and Inspiration Breakfast” held in Kaufmann Hall cafeteria.

Scherrens and his wife, Sandy, have four children: Jessica, Genevieve, Philip and Dylan.

Rachel Williams, president of the Student Government Association, spoke on behalf of Scherrens at the ceremony.

“I am pleased with all of the positive changes I’ve seen so far on campus,” Williams said. “He actively listens to our concerns and is active on campus.”

After his oath and receiving the Presidential Medallion, Scherrens said that no other words came to his mind but “thank you.”

He went on to say that as a team, they could all exceed the expectations of Newberry College.

“There’s no other place we’d rather be than Newberry College,” Scherrens said on behalf of his family as he thanked them for their love and support.

“You had us at hello,” he said, making a reference to the movie “Jerry Maguire.”

Scherrens’ wife said that Newberry College immediately felt like a match.

“We were looking for a small community where we could make a difference,” she said.

Following the inauguration ceremony, visitors were invited to a reception on Yost Portico
