NEWBERRY — The roar from the sky and sharp breeze on Thursday afternoon gave way to Blackhawk helicopters flying onto a field at Newberry College.
Erin Gray, second lieutenant and assistant professor of military science, said the Blackhawks flying to Newberry College is a part of the Highlander Battalion providing aviation experience and one of the many Army experiences for ROTC students.
This year, Gray said there were four ROTC students taking flight: Christopher Hooker, Mercade Alexander, Kevin Sinkler and Brandon Frost. Gray flew on a Blackhawk last year when she graduated and was impressed with the experience.
The students fly to Lander University, then to Presbyterian College and then come back to Newberry College, Gray said.
The outside lab is a hands-on approach to what the ROTC students learn in the classroom where they learn tactical lane, lane navigation and other aviation tactics, Gray said.
The ROTC students are flying with the National Guard on the Blackhawks and are chosen to fly because they are contracted to become an officer after graduation, Gray said.
