Newberry Announces Scarlet, Gray and Pink Initiative

October 01, 2013

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College athletic department is pleased to announce a partnership with the Palmetto Health Foundation as part of Newberry’s Scarlet, Gray and Pink Initiative, which will see Newberry athletics raise money for the Palmetto Health Breast Center throughout the 2013-14 athletic calendar.

Through a partnership with Palmetto Health Foundation and the Palmetto Health Breast Center, Newberry hopes to raise awareness and help educate the Newberry College community on the potential effects breast cancer can have. The partnership also allows for any funds raised by Newberry athletics during Scarlet, Gray and Pink Initiative to benefit the local community.

“We’re pleased to partner with Newberry College to help fight breast cancer in our community and to send a strong message about the importance of educating ourselves on the impact breast cancer has,” said Samuel Tenenbaum, president, Palmetto Health Foundation.

Palmetto Health Breast Center serves the region and provides nearly 47,000 mammograms and diagnoses nearly 600 breast cancers annually. Donations allow the Breast Center to continue to invest in the very best diagnostic equipment and diagnose breast cancer in its earliest stage. Donations also allow the Breast Center to serve uninsured patients and provide items to patients after surgery.

The opening event of the Scarlet, Gray and Pink Initiative will be Newberry’s Pinktober event, which will take place from October 5 to October 26 at select home sporting events on the Newberry College campus.

“The spirit program is thrilled to be a part of the Scarlet, Gray and Pink Initiative and help the Palmetto Health Care Foundation raise money and awareness to help women in our area,” said Lindsey Barwick, director of the spirit program, Newberry College.
Pinktober will begin on October 4 with an all-pink volleyball match between Newberry and Tusculum at 7 p.m. Both the Wolves and Pioneers will be wearing pink uniforms.
The events will kick off in full on October 5, opening with an 11 a.m. field hockey match against Mercy (N.Y.). Volleyball will host perennial NCAA Tournament side Armstrong at 1 p.m. The men’s and women’s soccer programs host Queens at the Smith Road Complex, with the women kicking off at 1:30 and the men set to begin at 4 p.m.

“I am so excited for the field hockey team to be a part of Pinktober,” said Catherine Somits, head field hockey coach, Newberry College. “Being a new program we are trying to set a precedent for future field hockey members that it truly is about having a life in the balance. Being part of Scarlet, Gray and Pink with the other teams drives home the sense of family, unity and the importance of supporting the community and other outside causes. The support that Newberry College gives outside its walls is just as important as the support we receive from the community, they go hand in hand.”

During the Scarlet, Gray and Pink Initiative female student-athletes will wear pink shoelaces during competition, while the volleyball team will wear pink jerseys during select matches.

The final event of Pinktober will be on October 26 as the football team plays host to UNC Pembroke in the Wolves’ annual pink game.

Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag "#NCGoesPink" on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram throughout the year in support of the Scarlet, Gray and Pink Initiative.

The Newberry wrestling team is set to host a pink event during the dual season, while in the spring Newberry will host a Pink Week that will include breast cancer awareness events at select home games. Pink events for the winter and spring will be announced at a later date.
