NEWBERRY COLLEGE ENRICHES FUTURE EDUCATORS AS SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHING FELLOWS INSTITUTION
October 04, 2011
Newberry, SC, September 26 2011 – Newberry College has welcomed 17 South Carolina Teaching Fellows this fall, continuing the education and enrichment of future teachers, and carrying out the program theme “Living in a Digital World, Responding to Change.” Newberry has been one of 11 institutions in South Carolina that participates in the program and provides education majors with professional and extended educational development opportunities.
In the past, Newberry fellows have attended summer enrichment programs, local and national conventions, and monthly guest speaking events at the College. The students have even organized campus events including homecoming activities, Teacher Cadet College Day, and a Healthy Heart Fair that offered educational sessions for adults and games for children to encourage good eating and exercising habits.
“The South Carolina Teaching Fellows program provides accessibility and experience for students looking to launch their teaching career in South Carolina,” said Department Head and Associate Professor Dr. Cindy Johnson-Taylor. “Newberry has worked to give these students a variety of experiences, and we will continue to enrich this program with even more educational opportunities on campus.”
Newberry has been a part of the fellowship program since its establishment in 2000. Administered by the Center for Education Recruitment, Retention & Advancement (CERRA), the program provides scholarships for participants to attend a Teaching Fellows Institution.
All fellows are members of the South Carolina ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) and Future Educators of America (FEA).
