Bishop Yoos to Address Newberry College Graduates

NEWBERRY, S.C. - As part of Newberry College’s concerted efforts to affirm and strengthen ties to the Lutheran Church, the Reverend Dr. Herman R. Yoos, III, Bishop of the South Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), will serve as the commencement speaker for Newberry College’s May 2012 graduation.  The event will take place Sat., May 5, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. in Eleazer Arena.

In 2008, Yoos was elected the 53rd Bishop of the South Carolina Synod, and was installed in a ceremony held in Wiles Chapel, on the Newberry College campus. A native of Charlotte, Bishop Yoos was ordained by the North Carolina Synod in 1979.  Prior to being elected Bishop, he served as pastor at St. Marks’ Lutheran Church, Charlotte, N.C., 1979-1982; Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Charleston, S.C., 1982-1996; and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Columbia, S.C., 1996-2008.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C., Yoos earned his Master of Divinity Degree in 1979 from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C. He later earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree in 1997 from the Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Ga.
