College Intramural Sports Participation Guide
Newberry College
Intramural Sports
Intramural Sports
is a division of Student Affairs. The mission of the
Intramural Sports Department is to provide competitive
activities for students, faculty, and staff to participate
in that foster feelings of community, sportsmanship,
and achievement. In order to encourage all students
to participate a wide and diverse array of activities
are offered. . Participation in Intramural Sports is
a privilege, not a right, which can be revoked or denied
at any time. The Director of Intramural Sports oversees
all campus recreation and reports directly to the Asst.
Dean of Students.
Program Objectives
To encourage every student to participate in organized
recreational activity
To encourage physical activity and good wellness choices
in one's leisure time
To organize and promote competitive events between individuals
and groups
To foster the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship
among competitors and spectators
To provide facilities, staff, and officials for athletic
competition.
Captain Responsibilities
The captain is
responsible for his/her team knowing and complying with
the rules, schedules of time and place of games to be
played. An official rulebook or copy of the rules is
available at the Intramurals office upon request. General
guidelines are always given out before each season.
Schedules, standings, and other information are posted
and updated consistently throughout the season. Information
is also available on the website.
Prior to any
contest, the team captain is responsible for signing
in their team and producing a valid NC ID card if asked.
Team captains are also responsible for their team's
spectators. A team captain and his/her representative
must be present at the mandatory captains meeting prior
to the start of the season. Failure to attend this meeting
may result in the team being ineligible.
Sportsmanship Policy
Part of our purpose
for intramurals is to provide an environment that is
fun and safe. Therefore, sportsmanship is rated above
all else. . Officials, staff, and administrators make
decisions to ensure the “spirit of the game” is preserved.
Teams, players, coaches, or fans may be ejected during
a game for displaying poor sportsmanship.
Players, coaches,
and participants shall not:
Use abusive language, threaten or abuse any player or
employee before, during, or after any activity.
Participate in a game in which he/she is ineligible
Argue or talk back to the game official (the team captain
may address an official in an appropriate manner)
Intentionally strike, push, trip, or contact any participant,
official, spectator, or administrator to cause physical
harm or may result in physical harm
Mistreat facilities, equipment, or supplies used by
Intramural Sports.
Partake in or exchange verbal abuse. This may include
language, obscenities, epithets directed towards race,
color, ethnicity, religion, and sex.
Fighting
: Under no circumstances shall fighting be
tolerated. Participants involved in a fight shall immediately
be removed from the contest and subjected to further
disciplinary action. Any time a team (more than one
player) is involved, the team shall automatically be
ejected from the league until further review.
Any bad sportsmanship
is subject to inquiry by the Dean of Students.
Eligibility
All current full-time
students, faculty, and staff regularly enrolled in any
department of the college are eligible to enjoy all
intramural activities. Participants shall remain eligible
until the graduate, withdraw, or fail to comply with
the rules of eligibility. Again, this privilege may
be revoked by the Intramural Department.
Part time students
(less than 12 hours) are eligible provided that they:
- Are pursuing a degree in the year in which he/she
is classified as a part-time student.
- Is enrolled in a departmental day course offered
by the college to earn credit for graduation.
- Has accidental medical insurance
- He/She paid the college activity fee
Olympic and professional athletes,
current or former, are not eligible to participate in
their respective sports. Varsity players may not participate
in their respective sports. A varsity team member is
defined as anyone participating in one or more scheduled
contests or attending one or more scheduled practices
after the first scheduled contest of the school year.
The player's ineligibility for that sport shall be in
effect until July 1st of that same year. Red-Shirted
athletes may participate with their coach's approval.
Intramural teams are limited ton one red shirt athlete
per team.
If an Intramural
employee determines that an individual is attempting
to check in with false identification in order to participate
in an intramural activity, the ID will be confiscated
and that individual will not be allowed to play. The
intramural employee will then question the team captain.
If it is determined that the captain was aware of the
individual's use of the improper identification, then
that team will forfeit the contest. In addition, any
individual caught trying to check in with an ID card
that is not his\her own has jeopardized themselves and
the owner of the ID to disciplinary action by the college.
All team rosters
are to be turned in and certified to the Office of Intramurals
before the season starts. Teams may add players at any
point in the season, including playoffs, so long as
that player is eligible and has not played for a team
prior. If a player wishes to be change their name to
a different roster in the sport, they must do so before
the second game of the season (for season sports), and
he/she must meet with the Director of Intramurals prior
to the change.
Forfeits and Defaults
A forfeit will
remove the team from the playoffs. The team's re-instatement
to the league is possible after meeting with the Director
of Intramurals. If both teams fail to appear, both teams
will be given a forfeit and dropped from the playoffs.
A Default is
an unplayed game that is recorded as a loss, but is
not considered a forfeit. A team may receive a one-time
default if they are unable to attend a game. There are
two ways a team can win a default. If the team:
Contacts the
Director of Intramural sports 24 hours in advance
Arrives at the
game with at least half the required players required
to start the game.
If a team defaults
twice, then it will be considered a forfeit. Two forfeits
mean an automatic ejection from the league, as well
as possible repercussions for other sports during the
same academic school year.
Weather Policy
It is our intention
to play every contest scheduled in campus recreation,
however bad weather may inhibit our ability. If it is
to be determined in advance that the field is unable
to be played upon, then the captain of the team will
be notified by phone. Players should ask their captain
if any announcements have been made.
Games will not
be played during the following:
Lightning in the immediate area (play will not resume
until 20 minutes after last lightning strike)
Hail, or other unsafe weather
Tornado warnings
Protests
Only protests
based on questions of player eligibility and rule interpretations
will be accepted. Protests that challenge the accuracy
of a judgment call made by a game official will not
be accepted. The team captain must make any protest
to the Site Supervisor at the time the incident occurs.
Once a situation has passed, it is no longer subject
to change or protest. It is the official's responsibility
to inform the other team that the remainder of the game
will be played under protest and that there may be a
ruling which will affect the outcome of the game.
Appeals
Once the Site
Supervisor has made a decision, the individual or team
involved may appeal this decision to the Intramural
Coordinator. The appeal must be brought to the attention
of the Intramural Coordinator within 24 hours (or first
business day) of the decision. Appeals will be reviewed
and a decision will be reached.
