The mission of the Office of Residence Life is to provide a living learning environment; where students are able to develop and promote intellectual transformation, social development, physical well-being and spiritual growth through a wide variety of

co-curricular programs and activities while maintaining clean, comfortable, attractive and secure facilities.

Residency Requirement

Newberry College requires all students to live on campus until they have reached 92 hours of course work, to the extent that space is available and subscribe to a meal plan, with exception of students who:

•  Live with an immediate family member (parents, legal guardian or sibling age 22 or older, grandparents, aunt, or uncle).

•  Are married.

•  Have 92+ credit hours.

•  Must live at the location of employment due to the nature of the employment.

•  Are legally responsible for a minor.

•  Are 25 years or older.

All requests to live off-campus must be approved, in advance by the Director of Residence Life, Assistant Dean of Students and the President of Newberry College. All students will be charged for a residence hall room and meal plan until permission to live and eat off-campus they are approved in writing from the Office of Residence Life.

Process for an off-campus appeal is as follows:

•  Complete a "Permission to Live Off-Campus Form"

•  Submit a letter of appeal

•  Complete your FAFSA

•  Register for Fall 2008 classes

Once you have completed your "Permission to Live Off-Campus Form" and appeal letter, please submit them to Josh Barnes in Derrick Hall Office #13. The Office of Residence Life will review your appeal and then respond to you in writing with the decision on your appeal. This process must be done for each academic year. Click on Residence Life Forms to find the "permission to Live Off-Campus Form".

New for Fall 2008 Land Line Phone Extensions

Land line phone extensions will not be provided in any residence hall room on the Newberry College Campus. Recent research conducted by Colleges and Universities across the nation has found that most students were using mobile devices for all of their communication needs.

Phones will be installed in common areas for students to make local phone calls, but no incoming calls will be accepted on these phones. Please work with your student to make arrangements for your specific communication needs.

Lofting Beds

Cement cinder blocks will not be allowed in the lofting of residence hall room furniture.

•  In Brokaw, Cromer, Kinard and Smeltzer Halls Lofting of bed units in each residence hall may be done with the components of the loft system provided by the College. Only the components of this loft system (supplied by the college) may be utilized in the configuration of a bunk/loft. No other materials may be used. Diagrams of how to arrange the loft system are available at check in.

•  In East Hall beds may be lofted if the room has a loft kit. No other materials may be used to loft this furniture.

•  In Derrick Hall the beds may be bunked or both beds can be placed on the floor. There are no loft kits available for this furniture system.

Room Rush 2008

Retuning students will be able to participate in Room Rush 2008 on March 16, 2008. At this time student will be able to choose their room for the 2008-2009 academic year. This year students will need to complete the following items before you will be able to sign up for a room or to be granted permission to live off-campus. All of our housing forms can be found on at www.newberry.edu on the Residence Life page. When you sign up for a room the contract you sign will be binding for the entire 2008-2009 Academic year and can only be cancelled or changed up to May 31, 2008.

On Campus Process

  • Complete a housing application
  • Complete a housing contract
  • Compete your FAFSA
  • Pay a room deposit of $50 in the Accounting

Office and attach a copy of the receipt to your

housing application. (This deposit will be credited to your account in the fall.)

  • Have a roommate(s) you wish to room with that

have completed all the above requirements.

All of the above must be completed before you can be placed in a room. If you do not have a roommate, your name will be place on a waiting list and we will place you in a room at a later date with a roommate assigned by the Office of Residence Life. There are two areas that could jeopardize your housing assignment.

  1. Failure to register for classes for Fall 2008 (April 1-11, 2008).
  2. Failure to pay your bill in full by August 5, 2008.

Once registration for classes has closed on April 11, 2008 and the deadline for payment of bill on August 5, 2008 the Office of Residence Life will review all students that have not completed these items. We will contact you in writing on how this will affect your housing assignment. After this notification from our office, you will have one week to contact our office before you will be removed from your current housing assignment and placed in another room.
