Available Majors, Minors, and Concentrations

As a communications student, you will have access to hands-on learning from day one, whether it's working in the television studio, the College's radio station, WNIR-LP FM, or writing real-world articles for the local newspaper, The Newberry Observer. You'll gain the skills and experience necessary to become a well-rounded communications professional, able to work across industries and in a variety of media.

 

Later in your Newberry career, you'll have the opportunity to pursue an internship, where you'll gain valuable real-world experience with media firms large and small, and build valuable contacts that could lead to your first big break.

 

Our students have worked with television stations in all three nearby television markets (Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg and Augusta). Within the last decade, four of our students have been selected for prestigious summer internships with South Carolina Educational Television. Students have also enjoyed immersive learning experiences with CNN, Disney and other national and international firms.

Requirements

Communications Major (47 hours)

Students pursuing a BA degree in Communications must complete a total of 47 semester hours in a prescribed course of study.

· Media writing

· Audio and video production

· Communications law and ethics

· A mandatory internship

· Senior seminar course

· Communications and related electives, according to area of interest

 

Communications majors with a concentration will meet the fundamental Communications core, with electives geared to their respective fields:

· Broadcasting

· Journalism

· Public Relations & Advertising

· Sports Communications

 

All Communications majors are required to complete a minor or double major, chosen in consultation with their advisers. Students may also fulfill this requirement with completion of an approved study-abroad program of at least 12 credit hours.

Communications Minor (20 hours)

The Communications minor includes 20 credit hours in:

· Media writing

· Video production

· Communications law and ethics

· Communications electives, according to area of interest

Communications majors or minors are required to have their own laptop computers, video cameras and editing software as well as a few essential accessories for video and audio production.
