Requirements
Requirements for a major in Chemistry include
- 35 hours: Chemistry core courses
- 7 hours: Chemistry electives
- 3 hours: Senior capstone
- 2 hours: Experiential learning
- 20 hours: Biology, Mathematics and Physics
Biochemistry (72 total hours)
The Biochemistry concentration is extremely beneficial to majors who aspire to improve quality of life through chemistry. Biochemistry is at the forefront of research in the fights against diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease, to name a few. Graduates of this program will be well-equipped to continue their education in the wide world of medicine or another scientific field.
Forensic Chemistry (74 total hours)
Our Forensic Chemistry concentration is the first of its kind in the Carolinas. Successful majors with this program graduate ready to pursue careers in justice. Students will have ample opportunities for internships and job shadowing at a variety of sites throughout South Carolina, including the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in Columbia.
Secondary Education (103 total hours)
For students with aspirations of teaching the next generation, our department offers a prescribed program of courses to become certified as secondary-level chemistry teachers. This interdisciplinary curriculum requires the completion of both science and education courses.
The Chemistry minor requires 25 credit hours in Chemistry fundamentals and electives, with additional coursework in Mathematics and Physics.
