Pre-Professional Health Tracks

Launch Your Career in Health

Newberry's pre-professional health tracks offer students their first steps toward a meaningful career in health care. With tracks in the Chiropractic, Dentistry, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant and Veterinary Medicine fields, Newberry is a great place to begin.

Some pre-professional tracks require a full degree while others may require specific course work before applying for a graduate program in your speciality. See "Requirements for Graduate Admission" for more information.

Requirements

Chiropractic: Newberry College has a dual-degree agreement with Sherman College of Chiropractic that allows a student to complete three years of coursework at Newberry before becoming eligible for admission to Sherman. While at Newberry, students must complete 58 hours toward the Biology major, along with core requirements. This "3+4" program will allow students to earn their bachelor's degree and doctorate of Chiropractic in seven years.

Dental: Dental school admission requirements include the Dental Admission Test (DAT). The DAT consists of a battery of four tests on the following: survey of the Natural Sources, Perceptional Ability, Reading Comprehension, and Qualitative Reasoning.

Medicine: The recent trends in admission to medical schools have reduced the number of courses required for admission. However, the standardized test, the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) remains an asset to admission. Scores reflect a student’s ability in four areas: biological and biochemical foundations of living systems; chemical and physical foundations of living systems; psychological, social, and biological foundations of behavior; and critical analysis and reasoning skills.

Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy: The health professions tracks of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy both require the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

Physician Assistant: Most Physician Assistant graduate programs require at least two years of college courses in basic science and behavioral science as prerequisites.

Pharmacy: Newberry College has a dual-degree agreement with the Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy that allows a student to complete three years of coursework at Newberry to become eligible for pharmacy school admission. While at Newberry, students must complete 58 hours toward the Biology major, along with core requirements. This "3+4" program will allow students to earn their bachelor's degree and doctorate of Pharmacy in seven years.

Veterinary Medicine: Veterinary Medical school admission requirements include the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). South Carolina does not have a veterinary school, however, students may be considered in-state residents for tuition purposes at the University of Georgia, Tuskegee University and Mississippi State University.

Q: How do I prepare for a professional degree as an undergraduate? Where do I start?
A: The expectations include a specific minimum GPA, experiential learning opportunities (internships, research), required entrance tests, prerequisite course requirements, degree requirements, and choice of major.
