President Scherrens served Newberry College since 2012 with passion, vision, and unwavering commitment. His leadership left a lasting mark on our institution, and his loss will be felt across our campus and beyond. 
 
Dr. Scherrens led Newberry College for over a decade to unparalleled growth, expansion, and recognition. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for President Scherrens’ devoted service to the Newberry College family and community.

Established Newberry College's master's division and launched the following graduate programs: 

  • M.S. in Organizational Development & Leadership 
  • M.S. in Sport Management & Leadership 
  • M.A. in Criminal Justice 

Launched and nearly completed the most comprehensive capital campaign in College history 

  • Transformed the abandoned Speers Street Elementary School into the Center for Teacher Education 
  • Constructed Pearson Residence Hall, the Melvin & Dollie Younts Athletic Performance Center, and opened a new campus bookstore on the site of the beloved Dopey's Cafe 
  • Renovated Kaufmann Hall, Wiles Chapel, Brokaw Hall, Cromer Hall 
  • Partnered with the City of Newberry to open the Oakland Tennis Center, home of Wolves Tennis 
  • Launched construction on a new Nursing & Health Science Center at the corner of College and Evans streets, and Phase II of the Herren Stadium renovations, a new athletic field house 

Introduced new sports, including: 

  • Women's Acrobatics & Tumbling 
  • Women's Field Hockey 
  • Men's Lacrosse 
  • Men's & Women's Track & Field 
  • Esports 
  • Women's Triathlon 
  • Women's Rugby 
  • Women's Wrestling
