Intercultural Development Inventory

Introduction to the Intercultural Development Inventory

As an introduction, the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) assesses intercultural competence – the capability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural difference and commonalities. The IDI consists of a series of statements that individuals respond to, indicating their level of agreement with each statement. A comprehensive Individual Profile Report describing the individual’s ability to shift perspectives and appropriately adapt behaviors is generated by the IDI after the assessment is completed, and an Individual Development Plan (IDP) is developed to help the individual develop their cultural competence further.

Watch a video introduction to the IDI.

The inventory can only be provided by a qualified administrator. Newberry College currently has seven QAs: Dr. Lindsy Boateng, Carlton Kinard '16, Dr. John Lesaine '07, Dr. Danielle Lewis, Dr. Jodie Peeler, Dr. Altheia Richardson and Dr. Peggy Winder '86. If you’re interested in taking the assessment and meeting with a QA to go over your results, please click the link to fill out the document and a qualified administrator will contact you.

DEIB Strategic Plan

DEIB Strategic Plan

As a Lutheran liberal arts institution, Newberry College is “called and empowered to serve the neighbor so that all may flourish” (Rooted & Open). That is, called and empowered to create and nurture a community where all people are not only welcomed, but also can experience a sense of genuine belonging. We must recognize that while diversity happens, inclusion and equity require informed, proactive change.

Newberry College's Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging is committed to the ongoing work of creating and nurturing a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment where everyone — students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners — can learn, live, work, and thrive. Our work in the Lutheran values of radical hospitality means we not only celebrate the differences that enrich our community, but diligently work to acknowledge the inequities and exclusions that define the world we inhabit, and in turn, to develop tools to build a more just and equitable world for all. To deepen our commitment to, and build our capacity for, fostering an inclusive and equitable environment in which our diversity is celebrated and integrated into all that we do. A Presidential Task Force was created to develop a strategic action plan that centers diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging across all campus entities.

The strategic plan is organized around five key priorities:

Planned Giving

Our Journey Starts With You

Without your selfless generosity, there simply wouldn’t be a Newberry College. We are fortunate to receive gifts from our alumni and friends that make an immediate impact on the College. You can also create a lasting impact on the College many years down the road.

Did you know that you can change a student’s life – or many – by doing something as simple as including us in your estate or overall financial plans? There can be significant tax savings with this kind of giving, and you’ve come to the right place to learn more. Your giving and legacy at Newberry College would forever grow and continue.

Types of Planned Gifts

Wills

You want to leave money to Newberry College in your will. You also want the flexibility to change your will in the event that life circumstances change. You can do both.

In as little as one sentence, you can complete your gift. This type of donation to Newberry College in your will or living trust helps ensure that we continue our mission for years to come. If you already have a will, you can just add this sentence as a codicil to your existing will:

“I give to Newberry College, a nonprofit organization currently located at 2100 College St., Newberry, SC 29108, [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose.”

For more information, please contact Bill Nash at 803.321.5617 or at Bill.Nash@newberry.edu.

Beneficiary Designations

Not everyone wants to commit to making a gift in their will or estate. Some prefer the increased flexibility that a beneficiary designation provides by using:

  • IRAs and retirement plans

  • Life insurance policies

  • Commercial annuities

It only takes three simple steps to make this type of gift. Here's how to name Newberry College as a beneficiary:

  • Contact your retirement plan administrator, insurance company, bank or financial institution for a change-of-beneficiary form. Many institutions have these on their website or app

  • Decide what percentage (1 to 100) you would like us to receive and name us, along with the percentage you chose, on the beneficiary form

  • Return the completed form to your plan administrator, insurance company, bank or financial institution

  • If you desire, please let the Newberry College office of Institutional Advancement know about your changes at 803.321.5363

IRA Charitable Rollover

Make a difference today and save on taxes. It’s possible when you support Newberry College through your IRA.

A Special Opportunity for Those 70½ Years Old and Older
You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $105,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Newberry College without having to pay income taxes on the money. Gifts of any value $100,000 or less are eligible for this benefit and you can feel good knowing that you are making a difference at Newberry. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Why Consider This Gift?

  • Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making

  • Beginning in the year you turn 73, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD)

  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions

  • Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax

For more information, please contact Bill Nash at 803.321.5617 or at Bill.Nash@newberry.edu.

Life Insurance Policies

Maybe you once needed life insurance for your loved ones, but now your family's requirements have changed. Why not use the insurance policy to help advance our mission? Not only will you make a substantial gift at a relatively low cost, but it is revocable at any time should you need to change your plans.

You can designate our organization as the beneficiary for a percentage of your life insurance policy's death benefit. You choose whatever percent you desire. To complete your future gift, you can either contact your insurance company or agent and request and complete a beneficiary designation form or download the form from your provider's website. Then mail it back to the insurance company. Keep a copy for your records.

For more information, please contact Bill Nash at 803.321.5617 or at Bill.Nash@newberry.edu.

Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund is like a charitable savings account you set up at a qualified public charity called the “sponsoring organization.” It allows for centralized giving and gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to charitable organizations. You can transfer cash or other assets to the sponsoring organization. In return, you qualify for an income tax charitable deduction for gifts to your donor advised fund.

You can open your own donor advised fund with a written agreement between you and the organization that gives you (or other family members) the right to recommend the distributions made from your fund. You can also create a lasting legacy by naming your loved ones as your successor to continue to recommend grants to charitable organizations, or you can name Newberry College as a beneficiary to receive all or part of the account after your lifetime.

For more information, please contact Bill Nash at 803.321.5617 or at Bill.Nash@newberry.edu.

Charitable Gift Annuities

When you are looking for ways to help Newberry College with its mission, you shouldn't feel like you are choosing between your philanthropic goals and financial security. One gift that allows you to support Newberry College's work while receiving fixed payments for life is a charitable gift annuity.

Not only does this gift provide you with regular payments and allow us to further our work, but when you create a charitable gift annuity with Newberry College, you can receive a variety of tax benefits depending on how you fund your gift.

If you fund your gift annuity with cash or appreciated property, you qualify for a federal income tax deduction if you itemize. In addition, you can minimize capital gains taxes when you fund your gift with appreciated property.

And now, you can fund your gift using your IRA assets. If you are 70½ or older, you can make a one-time election of up to $53,000 to fund a gift annuity. While your gift does not qualify for an income tax deduction, it does escape income tax liability on the transfer and count toward all or part of your required minimum distributions.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

Looking for a way to give Newberry College a significant gift? If you have built up a sizeable estate and are also looking for ways to receive reliable payments, you may want to check out the advantages of setting up a charitable remainder trust.

Benefits of a charitable remainder trust include:

  • Potential for a partial charitable income tax deduction

  • Potential for increased income

  • Up-front capital gains tax avoidance

There are two ways to receive payments with charitable remainder trusts:

  • The annuity trust pays you, each year, the same dollar amount you choose at the start. Your payments stay the same, regardless of fluctuations in trust investments.

  • The unitrust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. The amount of your payments is redetermined annually. If the value of the trust increases, so do your payments. If the value decreases, however, so will your payments.

Administrative Conferences

Incident Reporting

At Newberry College, we care about the safety, health, and well-being of members of our community. Join us in caring for our community. If you are aware of any information that should be reported, please use the link below.

Report an Incident

Administrative Conferences & Hearings

There are two formats for hearings. The first, and most common, is an individual one-on-one administrative conference. If a student doesn’t agree with the outcome, they can choose to have their case heard by the Student Conduct Hearing Board.

What Will Happen at the Conference or Hearing

Administrative conferences and hearings are designed to help address the report of an alleged policy violation in a way that is fair and educational. All documentation related to your case will be shared during your administrative conference.  If you would like a copy of the incident summary in advance, please contact the office at StudentConduct@newberry.edu or 803.321.5205.

Contesting a Hearing

If you disagree with the decision in your hearing, you can elect to have your case reheard by a panel of your peers.

Conduct Administrative Council

Purpose

To determine if a Student Code of Conduct violation occurred and if so, what sanctions are appropriate.

Process

You will meet with the conduct administrator for 30-60 minutes in the Office of Student Conduct. This is typically an informal, information-gathering meeting. Students who do not agree with the outcome of this process can choose to move forward with the Hearing Board process.

If you do not attend your meeting, a registration hold can be placed on your account and the case will be heard without your participation.

Interim Actions

Interim actions can be taken when there is a reasonable belief, based on the information available at the time, that a student or student organization poses a threat to health, safety, or property. Under these circumstances, the Office of Student Conduct may create a separation between the student or student organization and the College until the time in which both the student or organization and the College can gather additional information to make a final determination in a conduct hearing. A final decision, which may reinstate the student or result in more ongoing separation statuses, will be made during a Conduct Administrative Conference or Hearing. Every effort will be made to conduct the hearing within the shortest amount of time possible in order to both reduce the stress of displacement on the student while preserving due process and fairness. Interim actions for student organizations do not affect housing or academic progress, so will not result in the same need to expedite.

Judicial Hearing Board

Purpose

If you disagree with the findings of your administrative conference, or feel your case would be more fairly heard by a panel of your peers, you may choose to have a hearing with the Student Conduct Hearing Board.

Process

Typically, you will meet with a panel of students, staff and faculty members for one to four hours in the Office of Student Conduct's conference room.

Organizational Administrative Conference

Purpose

To determine if a group is collectively responsible for a Student Code of Conduct violation.

Process

An organization representative will meet with a conduct administrator for 30-60 minutes in the Office of Student Conduct. If your organization is accused of violating the Code of Conduct, this hearing is frequently the next step. One advisor may attend in support of the group. Organizations who do not agree with the outcome of this process can choose to have their representative move forward with the Hearing Board process.

As a guiding principle, groups will be held responsible for the acts of members when those acts grow out of, or are in any way related to, group life.

Sanctions

Code of Conduct sanctions vary, depending on:

  • the nature and severity of your actions

  • any previous violations or disciplinary actions

  • any unusual circumstances surrounding the incident

  • the rationale of your actions

  • the outcome or sanctions in similar, previous cases

  • harm to others and community impact

Other Consequences

You may face outcomes beyond educational sanctions as a result of your incident. Penalties range from educational intervention to suspension, with combinations of penalties possible. For most first offenses, sanctions are designed to be educational in nature and to help students learn from mistakes.

What it Means to Succeed Boldly

"Succeeding Boldly" Means "Lives Changed"

At Newberry College, "Succeed Boldly" is more than a tagline. It's a mission and a rallying cry, both for our institution and for our students, alumni, faculty and staff as individuals. Newberry's Lutheran heritage teaches that God’s grace frees us to pursue our callings with boldness as we change the lives of our students, their families and communities. This is our obsession, and we answer it as thriving individuals, successful professionals, and engaged citizens. What does "succeeding boldly" look like? The answers are as diverse as the members of our family around the world. To illustrate, here are just a few changed lives. Check back frequently. We're constantly adding more stories we'd love to tell you.

Eight Reasons to Advance Your RN to a BSN

A nursing instructor and nursing student examine a model patient together in a clinical setting

1. Higher pay.

Practicing nurses with bachelor's degrees often command higher salaries than those with associate degrees.

2. Career advancement.

A bachelor's degree offers the knowledge and versatility to take on leadership roles in clinical and educational settings. As the future of health care continues to evolve, nurses will face increased demand, conduct research, and shape policy. A bachelor's degree will equip you for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

3. Study while you work.

Newberry's online career-advancement program accommodates your needs and hectic schedule as a working nurse. Plus, you can earn your degree in as few as 12 months. You can get going in just three steps: Apply for admission → Send your official transcripts → Provide a copy of your nursing license!

4. Get ahead of the curve.

A bachelor's degree is quickly becoming the primary credential for nurses. Institutions like the National Academy of Medicine and the Institute of Medicine are calling for the vast majority of nurses to obtain bachelor's degrees. By getting ahead of the field and taking the next step now, you reap the maximum benefits that come with degree advancement.

5. Improve patient outcomes.

Newberry's BSN program prepares you to provide evidence-based care, emphasizing critical thinking, leadership, and the latest patient-centered care techniques. Multiple studies actually show decreases in patient mortality with increases in the number of baccalaureate-prepared nurses in hospitals.

6. Build your network.

At Newberry, even in an online program, you will form invaluable connections with classmates and instructors that open countless doors in your career.

7. Grow personally.

Pursuing your BSN can be a challenging and rewarding experience that will not only revolutionize your professional life, but fortify your confidence and create opportunities for you as a person.

8. Expand your horizons.

A bachelor's degree not only means advancement in nursing, but in the health care field, including leadership, specialized roles, and certifications in specialties like critical care, rehabilitation, women's health, diabetes and more. A BSN also allows you to pursue graduate studies, such as becoming an advanced practice registered nurse, or APRN.

* Must already hold an associate degree in nursing at time of enrollment

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging

Fostering a Diverse and Inclusive Community

Newberry College is dedicated to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming environment such that all who study, work, and visit our campus feel a sense of belonging. We pledge to nurture the holistic development of our students, faculty, and staff in their pursuit of lives of meaning and purpose. Such an environment requires engagement with people from diverse backgrounds, identities, and perspectives. We acknowledge that, like many other institutions of higher education, we have historically enacted policies and practices that have excluded populations of people. We commit to learning from our past as we forge a new path, building upon the foundational tenets of the Lutheran liberal arts tradition, which inspires us to be “called and empowered, to serve the neighbor, so that all may flourish.”

Diversity refers to the various backgrounds, lived experiences, values, and worldviews of individuals and communities that stem from differences in culture and circumstance. This includes race, ethnicity, gender and gender expression, age, religion, language, (dis)ability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, geographic region, and more.

Equity is the active process of identifying and reducing or eliminating the structural barriers related to race, class, disability, gender, and other identities that limit access to, or prevent full participation in, our institutions and communal life. It requires understanding the root cause(s) of disparities, identifying the barriers, and redressing the exclusion of historically underrepresented groups within our society.

Inclusion is the intentional act to involve people from diverse backgrounds and identities and create environments where any individual or group is welcomed, respected, supported, valued, and given the opportunity to fully participate.

Belonging is the extent to which people within a shared community know and feel that they are valued, respected, included, and celebrated for their individual and unique contributions and identities.

Message from the Vice President

Greetings from the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging!

I am excited and honored to serve in this inaugural role at Newberry College. I began my tenue on May 22, 2023, and it didn’t take long before I felt like I was part of the Wolves community due in large part to the warm welcome that was extended to me during my transition to the College. From as early as my interview, I have been impressed with the caliber of students, faculty, and staff. I am excited about the many partnerships that I have developed, and will continue to develop, to make Newberry an even more diverse, equitable and inclusive institution where everyone who studies, works and visits feels like they belong. During my first year, those partnerships have afforded me the opportunity to develop and implement several new initiatives.

I am excited about the future of Newberry College and all that will be accomplished through these continued partnerships. If I can be of any support to you in your efforts, please reach out to me at Altheia.Richardson@newberry.edu.

Go Wolves!

Speech & Debate Team

The Power of Persuasion

Newberry College's Speech & Debate Team allows students to hone their speaking and performing skills and compete against their peers across the country. Harnessing the power of the spoken word, the team combines persuasion, interpretation and leadership in a variety of formats. No prior experience is required, and students in any program of study are eligible to join.

Team members can receive generous, renewable scholarships ranging from $14K to $17K each year (not stackable with academic scholarship). Speech & debate team members play sports, serve in student government, perform music and theatre, and are involved in just about everything, so the team is a perfect addition to any schedule.
