Celebrating Native American Month

Honoring Native American Heritage Month

Newberry College celebrated Native American Heritage Month with thoughtful events to foster cultural understanding and reflection. One of the most significant events was the presentation “From Red Men to Wolves: The Story of Newberry College Mascots” by Dr. Tracy Power. This engaging presentation explored the evolution of Newberry College's mascots, tracing the history of the "Indian" mascot used from 1909 until the college transitioned to the Wolves in response to NCAA policy changes.

Dr. Power's presentation examined the complex history behind the use of Native American imagery as mascots, diving into the broader debates around Native American mascots in the United States. Through a series of short stories and vivid images, attendees learned how Newberry College initially adopted the Indian mascot, embraced it for nearly a century, and ultimately changed it to reflect evolving values and compliance with NCAA guidelines.

The event not only provided a historical perspective but also fostered a meaningful conversation about symbolism, identity, and the impact of mascot choices on communities. Refreshments were provided, offering a chance for further discussion and reflection.
