Bio:
Paul Maxwell is a 27 year old cellist currently attending the University of South Carolina, pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts studying under Professor Claire Bryant, as well as working in the teaching, chamber, and orchestral sectors in South Carolina, as well as North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. He has participated in numerous concerts, festivals, and competitions performing solo, in chamber groups, and with symphony orchestras. Through the years Paul has won awards in both solo and chamber competitions. Recent festivals include Decoda Chamber Music Festival in 2024 and 2025, where he had the opportunity to explore and perform new music, “CU Education Abroad Global Seminar: Chamber Music Performance France” in 2025, where he had the experience of collaborating with fellow musicians and composers from CU Boulder while studying abroad in central and Southern France, and National Music Festival in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
In May of 2016 Paul was selected to participate in the prestigious International Piatigorsky Festival in Los Angeles. Paul has a deep love of chamber and orchestral music, currently serving as assistant principal cello of Asheville Symphony since 2023, the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra since 2025, and the UofSC symphony orchestra since 2024, as well as a member of the UofSC Graduate String Quartet for the duration of his DMA. He also has a passion for teaching, currently serving as a teaching assistant at the UofSC School of Music, as well as Adjunct Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at Newberry College.
Previous degrees include his Bachelor’s of Cello Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying under professor Sharon Robinson, and his Master’s in Cello Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, studying with Professor Philippe Muller. His chamber music studies include schooling and masterclasses with members of such quarters as the Emerson, Parker, and Cavani, among others.
