Dr. Montgomery received his B. S. in Chemistry from Allen University, his M. Div. in biblical studies from the Interdenominational Theological Center, and his D. Min. in Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) from Emory University. His master’s work focused on the old and new testaments and his D. Min. work involved liberation and justice in the book of Amos and system theories as a paradigm for the church. Dr. Montgomery was one of several scholars awarded a grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities to do post-doctoral research on Religion and Diversity at Haverford College, Haverford, Pa. He was also selected by the United Negro College Fund to do post-doctoral studies on the Psalms at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. Prior to joining the Newberry College faculty in 2010, Dr. Montgomery taught at Claflin University and the Interdenominational Theological Center Cooperative Theological Program. Over the years, Dr. Montgomery has presented papers at the South Carolina Academy of Religion and the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion. Dr. Montgomery’s research interests include Liberation Theology, People of Color in and of the Bible and the Early Christian Era.
