Athletic Department Announces Goal to Set Attendance Record at Saturday’s Homecoming

The Newberry Athletic Department has announced a goal to set an all-time attendance record at Saturday’s Homecoming game against Carson-Newman.

The initiative to “Sell Out Setzler” comes as the Wolves look to win their sixth consecutive game, which would equal a 2013 winning streak as the second-longest of the past decade. Newberry is currently in sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference standings and is seeking its first conference championship since 2008.

Fans are encouraged to wear scarlet on Saturday. White rally towels will be handed out in the stadium and gray “Beat Carson-Newman” stickers will be available before kickoff.

"Our goal is to win the South Atlantic Conference football championship,” stated Interim Director of Athletics Ralph Patterson. “This week's Homecoming game against a great opponent like Carson-Newman is a wonderful opportunity to Sell Out Setzler. How cool it would be for all of our Wolves Nation to wear our colors and help us set an attendance record?"

Several special events are planned in conjunction with this weekend’s game. A 5K run will take place in downtown Newberry Saturday morning before a parade beginning at 1:15 p.m. will encircle the campus.

The traditional pregame pep rally, featuring the Newberry cheerleaders, Scarlet Poms dance team, and Scarlet Spirit Marching Band will take place on the steps of Holland Hall, with kickoff slated for 4:00 p.m. Halftime festivities include the revealing of the Homecoming Court and a performance by the Scarlet Spirit Marching Band.

Two other Newberry athletic events are also planned for Saturday afternoon. The Wolves’ field hockey team, winners of three of their last four games, hosts Sewanee at noon at Setzler Field, while the volleyball team welcomes No. 23 Wingate to Elezaer Arena at 1:00 p.m.

The Wolves and Eagles have split the last six meetings, with Newberry riding a two-game winning streak over Carson-Newman at Setzler Field. Eagles’ coach Ken Sparks passed Pop Warner for fifth on the NCAA’s all-time wins list with his 337th career win Saturday at Brevard.

The largest crowd on record at the facility came during the 1999 edition of the Bronze Derby game, when 5,100 fans packed Setzler Field to see Presbyterian take a 45-35 decision over Newberry.

Fans are asked to wear scarlet and include the hashtag #SellOutSetzler on social media posts leading up to the game.
