NEWBERRY – The Newberry City Council has honored 11 Newberry College seniors for contributions to the city, community, and college during their time as students. Mayor Foster Senn presented each student with a proclamation, recognizing service and leadership in all aspects of collegiate achievement and community service. The following seniors were recognized:

Kevin Weber, of Summerville, S.C., for volunteering at local elementary schools, reading to children and opening doors for students on Fridays; and for volunteering with the Prosperity Parks and Recreation program, starting its archives and records department. A history major, he received the Dorothy Jeff History Award, and he set and tied school records for field goals as a member of the football team.

Timmany Nesbitt, of Wellsford, S.C., an honor student and member of the cheerleading team, for volunteering at Newberry Elementary; for working at City of Newberry festivals; and for serving as an Alpha Leader, resident advisor and student ambassador. She was given the Newberry College Who’s Who award in November 2018, and is a member of Blue Key Honor Society.

Brad Dixon, of Leeds, England, a Dean’s List student and soccer team captain, for helping with reading days at elementary schools; leading the soccer team in hosting youth clinics; volunteering at Boys Farm; and helping host successful outings with the Screaming Eagles special needs team. Dixon also broke every goalkeeper record in Newberry College soccer program history.

Shelby Britten, of Victoria, Australia, a member of the basketball team, for volunteering at Newberry festivals, at the Newberry County animal shelter, at Newberry Elementary by reading to children, and at local high schools by modeling professional attire for dress-to-impress days. A psychology major, she plans to work in prisons back home in Australia, while pursuing a professional basketball career, with a contract to play for the Eltham Wildcats.

Peyton Spangler, of Clinton, S.C., a member of the baseball team, for traveling to Haiti on two separate occasions for mission trips with the Newberry College FCA; and for planning and helping to lead the free Newberry County baseball camp for youth.

Sarah Johnson, of Ruby, S.C., for volunteering at the Newberry Spanish Academy, among others, and for introducing Little Free Libraries to Newberry. Supported by a Muller Center Research Fellowship, she established three libraries in underserved areas, with each library painted by local elementary students and filled with books. An elementary education and early childhood education major, she will teach fourth grade at Saluda Elementary next year.

Danton Hyman, of Prosperity, S.C., a member of the baseball team, for helping lead the free Newberry County baseball camp for youth; for serving his community through Operation In-As-Much; for being active at St. James Lutheran Church and for being a role model for young people in Newberry County.

Jay Salter, of Prosperity, S.C., a Dean’s List student, for serving as student body vice president and working with the City of Newberry on issues affecting the college; for writing about local events as a contributor to the Newberry Observer; and for performing with the Newberry College Singers and Jazz Big Band. A political science major, he is also a member of Young Americans for Liberty and of Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society.

Jamaal Satisfield, of Lexington Park, Md., a Dean’s List student and captain of the basketball team, for working with the Big Brother program at Gallman Elementary; for volunteering at youth basketball clinics and the Special Olympics; and for serving as a company commander in the Newberry College ROTC. He will be commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army after graduation.

Korina Martinez, of Fayetteville, N.C., a Dean’s List student and member of the soccer and tennis teams, for volunteering regularly at White Oak Manor and MSA Hospice; and for participating in multiple service projects with her athletic teams. She plans to be commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army in the branch of medical services after finishing medical school.

Lauren Evans, of Columbia, S.C. for serving in major leadership positions in her sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and as student body secretary for the Student Government Association; for organizing a yard sale among sororities to benefit the Newberry community; and for serving on the GraceWorks planning team and participating in numerous volunteer efforts. An early childhood education major, she plans to teach after graduation with long-term aspirations of becoming a school guidance counselor.

The recognized students were nominated by professors, coaches, administrators, and community members.
