August 20, 2019

NEWBERRY — Newberry College has appointed LaShawn A. Hanes as coordinator of disability services, beginning with the 2019-2020 academic year.

“I am beyond excited for the opportunity to work with students and families who have found a home at Newberry College,” said Hanes. “I will work to ensure full access and participation on campus, both academically and socially, and to show there are no barriers to what our students can accomplish.”

Hanes’ role includes managing academic, residential and commuter accommodations for students with disabilities, as well as ensuring accommodations equitable and reasonable. She will also develop and manage plans for long-term absences and serve as a general advocate for students with disabilities.

Hanes comes to Newberry from Owosso (Mich.) Public Schools, where she served as a special education teacher and caseload manager for six years. She has also served in equity inclusion and academic affairs at the University of Michigan, and as adjunct faculty at Baker College. She has also coached high school-level basketball and volleyball.

“We are so pleased to welcome LaShawn to the team,” said Dr. Sandy Scherrens, associate dean for student success. “We look forward to ensuring every student has what they need to be successful.”

Hanes holds a Master of Arts in Educational Technology, and a bachelor’s degree in learning disabilities education, both from Michigan State University.
