Luke Gibson has been named the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete for men's basketball.

Newberry's first-ever Academic All-American in men's basketball becomes fourth Newberry men's basketball player to earn the award in the last five years. The prestigious honor equally weighs athletic achievement with academic success and community service.

Head coach Dave Davis is proud of Gibson's achievements, saying, "Luke Gibson has been the consummate student athlete in his entire time here. What an incredible honor for him and he truly deserves this award."

Gibson, a junior, boasts an exceptional 3.98 GPA as an accounting major. The Albemarle, N.C. native has been named to the Dean's List in each semester at Newberry College.

The junior started in 18 games in Coach Davis' five-in, five-out system, asserting himself as one of the leaders on a young Wolves squad. Gibson was third on the team in scoring this season, averaging 11.2 points per game while leading the team in both three-point percentage (.385) and three-point field goals made (65). He's also served as the iron man for Newberry this season, playing in every game and leading the way in minutes per game (25.8).

Gibson has a long resume of community service activities during his time as a Newberry student as well. The junior has worked with multiple special olympics basketball events hosted at Newberry, as well as serving as volunteering as a referee-coach with the Law Enforcement & Youth Basketball Tournament meant to improve relations between law enforcement and community members.

During his freshman and sophomore years, Gibson served as a weekly Spanish Academy volunteer at Newberry Academy, as well as participating in a weekly team activity at Gallman Elementary where he assisted a classroom teacher. Gibson's efforts earned him an exclusive selection to attend the NCAA Division II APPLE Institute in Dallas to promote student-athlete wellness and substance abuse prevention; using the tools he learned there, he will work with a team to create and implement a Newberry-specific action plan on this topic.

Gibson becomes the 20th SAC Scholar-Athlete across all sports at Newberry College.
