Music Professor to Give Saxophone and Clarinet Recital

NEWBERRY, S.C. On Tuesday, February 12 at 8:00 p.m., the Newberry College campus will ring with the sounds of music as Dr. Barry McGinnis, associate professor of woodwinds and music history, will present a saxophone and clarinet recital in the Alumni Music Centers West Memorial Recital Hall.
Dr. McGinnis will be assisted by Dr. Laurel Larsen, associate professor of piano and music theory. Also assisting Dr. McGinnis will be Dr. John Roberts, instructor of percussion.
This program is unique in that one piece is for saxophone and marimba, a combination of instruments that is gaining popularity, said Dr. McGinnis. The program includes pieces by Carl Maria von Weber, Francis Poulenc, Howard Buss, and Mark Ford.
Dr. McGinnis teaches woodwinds, music history, and directs the woodwind ensembles and jazz combo at Newberry College. He received the Bachelor of Science degree in saxophone performance from Towson University, the Master of Music-Woodwind Specialist degree from East Carolina University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance from the University of Georgia. His former teachers include Dr. Joseph Briscuso, Dr. Brad Foley, Dr. Kenneth Fischer and Dr. Theodore Jahn.
Dr. McGinnis has performed extensively in both classical and jazz settings. Performances include regional and national meetings of the North American Saxophone Alliance and international meetings of the World Saxophone Congress. He has appeared with the East Carolina Symphony Orchestra, the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra and the Augusta Symphony Orchestra. He has served as adjudicator for various music festivals in South Carolina, Colorado, Maryland and North Carolina, and served on the faculties of Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Adams State College before coming to Newberry College.
Dr. McGinnis is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the International Clarinet Association, the College Music Society and serves as the South Carolina state chair for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors. He is a member of Delta Omicron, Kappa Kappa Psi and Pi Kappa Lambda music fraternities.
