Newberry College Graduate Honored by South Carolina Association of Teacher Educators

January 11, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C.- Newberry College graduate Jeremy Rinder was recently honored with the Student Teacher of the Year award from the South Carolina Association of Teacher Educators (SCATE). The award was open to all student teachers in South Carolina who taught during the 2010-2011 academic year.

In October, Rinder was present to accept the award at Francis Marion University, and was accompanied by Associate Professor Dr. Lisa Waller and Sally Lowery, who worked with him during his student teaching experience and nominated him for the award. Students in the College's education program are given the opportunity to student teach at different schools in South Carolina.

"We provide our future teachers with real world experience at local schools, and the Newberry education students always make an impact at those schools and with the students they influence," Waller said. "Jeremy was an ideal educator during his time as a student teacher and exemplifies everything we teach our education students here at Newberry."

Rinder completed his student teaching at Ballentine Elementary School, and is currently teaching 5th grade English language arts and social studies at Barnwell Elementary School in Barnwell, SC.
