Newberry College Business Department will host the director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, Kevin Shwedo, on Feb. 27 at 9:25 a.m. in Kohn Lecture Hall on the Newberry campus.
Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Shwedo to the Governor’s Cabinet in 2011 as the Executive Director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. His responsibilities include administering the state’s motor vehicle licensing and titling laws by maintaining strict controls to deliver secure and valid identification, licenses, property records, while accurately accounting for the receipt and timely distribution of approximately $500 million. He also oversees appropriate fiscal controls to ensure accountability of state’s resources, through auditing and oversight management to ensure compliance and physical and personal stewardship. Previously he worked for the U.S. Army as Deputy Commander, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. He will be at Newberry College to share his experiences with leadership and success in different positions.
“I think our students will gain a lot of perspective from Mr. Shwedo,” said Dr. Sarah Bryant of the Newberry College business department. “He has a lot of information to share on leadership, opportunities and being able to be adaptable in different environments.”
Shwedo holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the University of North Carolina and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. He is also a designated Distinguished Military Graduate from Valley Forge Military Junior College. Shwedo has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Medal.
