The Newberry College Chamber Orchestra and the Newberry College Singers have been invited to participate in a special “Lange Nacht der Kultur” (long night of culture) festival in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Saturday, June 15, 2019.   The event, and related performance events earlier that week, will be a collaboration between the Newberry College musicians and members of the ensemble “d’acCHORd”, a Kaiserslautern-based  a cappella vocal ensemble, and friends from the Sinfonieorchester des Landkreises Kaiserslautern (SOKL).

Participating students and faculty will depart South Carolina on Thursday evening, June 6, and will enjoy ten full days of performing and sight-seeing in southwest Germany, with considerable support from their German hosts.  Both ensembles have also been invited to appear on the US military bases in the region, performing for students at Kaiserslautern High School, and at Ramstein High School.

To offset some of the expenses of this journey, participating students and faculty will seek local sponsorship possibilities.   Dr. Patrick Casey, music director of the Newberry Chamber Orchestra—and tour coordinator--is actively engaged with some civic organizations in the Kaiserslautern area for co-sponsorship potential as well.   All ideas for area sponsorship possibilities are most welcome.   Please feel free to contact Dr. Casey at (803) 321-5634, or with thoughts or inquiries.

The Newberry Chamber Orchestra (NCO) is a college-community or town and gown orchestra and is open to students, faculty, staff, and community members in the region. The NCO performs orchestral music from the Baroque to the 20th century and rehearses every Monday evening from 6:30-8:30 pm on the Newberry College campus.  For more information please contact Dr. Casey at (803) 321-5634.

Newberry College Singers was founded in 1932, and is one of the oldest groups on campus. This premier auditioned choir tours annually and performs choral masterworks that range from the Middle Ages through the 21st century.  The Singers are under the direction of Department of Music chair, Dr. Chris Sheppard.  Dr. Sheppard can be reached at 803-321-5181.
