Security Access To Facilities

Security Access To Facilities

Security planning is an integral part of any successful security program. Plans for new and renovated facilities are reviewed for security and safety impacts. Planning and maintaining the landscaped areas of the campus are important to the campus appearance as well as maintaining good security. Campus administrators and student leaders review security and safety procedures and considerations when planning campus events and activities. The Physical Plant responds to work orders daily to repair locks, windows and lighting. A continuous program of lighting improvements, with input from both the students and staff, has made some significant improvements in the past several years. There have been continuous improvements each year in campus fire detection and alarm systems. Security and safety planning is an on-going process on the Newberry College campus.

Most campus buildings and facilities are accessible during normal business hours, excluding holidays. Athletic facilities, computer labs, library, and other select college service areas have varying hours of operation. Since the College cannot ensure that unauthorized persons will not enter into residence halls, students are strongly encouraged to lock their room doors at all times. All exterior doors are locked. Hall access requires the use of an ID card which also acts as an key access card. The violation of this policy may result in disciplinary proceedings. Resident hall policies may be found in the student handbook.

Access to Residential Facilities

We expect resident students to secure their individual rooms and apartments and report suspicious persons to Campus Security and the Residence Life Coordinators. All Residence Halls have card access equipment at the exterior doors. These exterior locking systems are designed to keep strangers out of the residence halls. For everyone's safety, do not prop open these exterior doors. Visitors are allowed into the halls only when escorted by a resident.

Maintenance of Campus Facilities

Campus Security Officers, as part of their general patrol procedure, generate a work order to Campus Maintenance when any defective lighting or unsafe condition on campus is noted. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to report any safety or security concerns directly to Campus Security so their safety concerns may also be addressed.
