Kevin Lyons begins his first season as Assistant Coach for Newberry Women’s Basketball in the 2023-24 campaign.
Lyons comes to Newberry after being involved with the University of South Carolina Women’s Basketball program for 4 years. Kevin was a Scout Team Player for the Gamecocks from 2019 to 2022. After graduating, he served as the Administrative Assistant for the 2022-23 season. During his time at South Carolina, the program had an overall record of 131-9 with 3 SEC regular season championships, 3 SEC tournament championships, 3 Final Four appearances, 1 unanimous #1 final ranking, and a National Championship.
In his role as a Scout Team Player, Kevin competed against and helped develop some of the best players in the country. Additionally, he learned tactical concepts, set plays, defensive styles, and coaching techniques while watching film, learning opponent scouting reports, and observing the coaching staff.
As an Administrative Assistant, Kevin was responsible for managerial tasks surrounding practices and individual workouts. He also took on bench, pregame, and post game responsibilities for all home contests during the 22-23 season. Additionally, Lyons helped with recruiting visits, scouting reports, and away game departures.
Kevin was also the head coach for the Women’s Basketball Club Team at the University of South Carolina for 2 school years, 2021-2023. The team won multiple tournaments over his two years and served as a great learning opportunity for him.
Kevin’s father was a women’s high school basketball coach in NY for 6 years and his family currently resides in NY’s Hudson Valley and Lexington, SC.
