Newberry College has announced the return of its First 56 initiative to welcome, educate and engage students in campus life. The initiative, now in its fourth year, features at least one event each of the first 56 days of fall semester. The program takes its name from 1856, the year the College was founded.

Newberry College is committed to providing students with a wide variety of sport-related activities to help promote a positive outlook and a healthy lifestyle. Whether you work out at the Student Fitness Center, compete in intramural leagues or tournaments, take a group exercise class or participate in other activities and health-related contests throughout the year, the Office for Campus Recreation is committed to programming that supports your social, mental and physical well-being. Newberry College has officially launched esports as an intercollegiate sport and is now recruiting student-athletes for the 2020-2021 season. While competitive game has amassed more than two billion players globally, it also has become one of the fastest-growing spectator sports in the world.

Intramural sports are a great way to stay active, get to know people throughout campus and participate in organized sports. We offer intramural programs throughout the academic year.

 

Spring Intramural 

The recreation program is committed to providing fun, safe, and structured sport-related activities to help promote physical, mental, and social development for each student. We offer intramural programs throughout the academic year, and we are looking forward to seeing you!

5 v 5 Basketball 
Get into the Hoops at the Berry! Competitive games 1-2 times per week during the six-week league. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs for bragging rights and will receive Intramural Champion T-Shirts. 

Indoor Volleyball 
Teams of 6 will go head-to-head on the v-ball court. So, gather your friends and come dominate the net. Winners of this six-week league will receive the respected title “Champions” as well as T-shirts. 

 5 v 5 Flag Football

Whether you are a beginner or beast, come show your skills on the field. Remember, all it takes is all you’ve got! Winning team will take home a 7-foot trophy.

The Student Fitness Center is a place for students, faculty, and staff to get a good workout and focus on staying healthy. The fitness center provides a variety of cardio equipment, free weights, and selected weight machines. The workout facility is available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. All users are required to sign in at the front desk. 

After a full day of class and studies, sometimes you just want to relax with your friends. With our spacious dorm rooms and student centers, you'll have no shortage of places to just hang out and chill.

Located just 20-30 minutes from campus, Lake Murray is often referred to as the “Jewel of South Carolina”. The lake was just ranked 24 out of 100 best lakes in the nation and has been voted in the top 10 places to boat and live. Boating, jet-skiing, fishing, kayaking, hiking and camping on an island are some of the activities of choice.

If camping is your thing, then Dreher Island State Park is the place for you! The park offers three islands, 348 acres and access to 12 miles of Lake Murray shoreline. Water sports, nature trails and some of the best striped and large-mouth bass fishing spots make Dreher Island an ideal getaway.
