Our Leadership

Dr. Harpool previously served as President of Northcentral University, a fully online institution serving over 15,000 students. He initially joined Newberry College as a consultant for the online and graduate division, later expanding his role to develop a competitive speech and debate program. Under his leadership, Newberry’s online graduate division has grown from $100,000 to $2.4 million in revenue in under three years. Additionally, the newly launched speech and debate program now attracts 40 students annually and recently ranked sixth in the nation in debate at the Pi Kappa Delta national tournament.

Dr. Harpool brings 35 years of experience in higher education, having served in roles including Faculty Member, Department Chair, Dean, Vice President, Provost, President, and Trustee. He holds a Ph.D. with distinction in higher education leadership from Saint Louis University, a J.D. from the University of Missouri–Columbia School of Law (where he served as student body President), and a B.S. in Education from Missouri State University.

His career includes service as Chief Operating Officer of the Academic Division of Kaplan, Inc., legal representation for over 100 colleges, and media work as a legal and political commentator for NBC affiliates in Chicago and St. Louis. Dr. Harpool is a nationally recognized expert in higher education, with his scholarship cited in more than 100 academic books and articles.

Known for his data-informed decision-making, effective communication, and transparent leadership, Dr. Harpool also brings a personal commitment to service as an ordained minister. He looks forward to continuing to serve the students and the mission of Newberry College as Transitional President through 2027.

He and his wife, Amy, reside in Newberry County on Lake Murray. They have three grown children.
